Butterfly weed is the orange star of the summer meadow, a strong-growing native perennial of eastern North America and a longtime favorite of gardeners. Flower color ranges from clear yellow to nearly red, but the typical Asclepias tuberosa blazes a vivid orange that butterflies, and the eye, find from across the garden.

Unlike the other milkweeds, butterfly weed carries no milky sap and grows from a deep taproot that loves heat, sun, and sharp drainage, shrugging off drought once settled. The flowers feed monarchs and a parade of other butterflies and bees, and the foliage is a monarch host. Cut spent flowers back to spur a longer season and to limit the long pods that split open to loose their parachute seeds on the wind. The deep root resents disturbance, so site once and leave the plant in place.

Plant butterfly weed in full sun in well-drained, even lean or sandy soil, in a meadow, a pollinator border, or a dry sunny bank, where the orange heads can sing against blues and purples. Deer-resistant, drought tolerant, and long-lived, native across much of the United States.

Design Notes

A meadow, pollinator border, or dry sunny bank native, where the flat orange heads sing against blues and purples and draw monarchs and other butterflies all summer. Butterfly weed grows from a deep taproot that loves heat and sharp drainage, so site once and leave undisturbed; pairs beautifully with little bluestem, coreopsis, and salvias. Deer-resistant and drought tolerant.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Bright orange flower clusters (sometimes yellow to red), late spring to summer

Flowers. Flat-topped clusters of small, star-shaped flowers, typically vivid orange but ranging to yellow or red, from late spring through summer, a top nectar source for monarchs, swallowtails, and bees. Foliage. Narrow, lance-shaped leaves on sturdy, upright stems; unusually for a milkweed, the sap is not milky, and the leaves host monarch caterpillars. Fruit. Spindle-shaped pods follow, splitting to release silky, wind-borne seeds; deadhead to extend bloom and limit self-sowing.

Care

Light. Full sun; at least six hours of direct sun.

Soil. Well-drained, even lean, sandy, or rocky soil; dislikes wet, heavy ground.

Water. Water through the first season to settle the deep taproot; very drought tolerant after, and best left on the dry side.

Pruning. Deadhead to prolong bloom and curb reseeding; cut stems to the ground in late fall or early spring. The deep root resents division and transplanting.

Hardiness. USDA zones 4 to 9.

History & tradition

Butterfly weed carries the old name pleurisy root, earned from the best-known traditional use. Several Native American peoples, and later folk and eclectic practitioners, prepared the root as an expectorant for pleurisy, bronchitis, and other chest complaints, and also for digestive upset, fevers, pain, and women's complaints. The root holds cardiac glycosides and is toxic in quantity. This account is cultural and historical background only, not medical advice, and is not a recommendation for self-treatment.
