Once thought lost to time and development, Cyrilla arida, known as Scrub Titi, is a botanical rarity with a story as striking as the summer bloom. The famed botanist J.K. Small first described this shrub in the early twentieth century from the desert-like scrub of central Florida. For decades the identity of Scrub Titi was debated and any wild presence uncertain, until a dedicated search led to rediscovery by Kenneth Wurdack and the Woodlanders team in Highlands County, Florida. That tiny remnant population may now be gone, and Cyrilla arida may no longer exist in the wild, which makes every plant in cultivation all the more precious.

Unlike the wetland-loving relatives in the genus, Cyrilla arida thrives on deep, nutrient-poor, xeric sandhills, the kind of ground where few plants dare to persist. That toughness carries into the garden, where Scrub Titi has proven surprisingly adaptable, performing well even in more temperate settings such as Atlanta, Georgia.

In summer, Scrub Titi puts on a graceful show of creamy white racemes, slender arching flower clusters that stand out against the fine-textured foliage. The blooms are ornamental and also beloved by pollinators, giving this shrub real ecological value alongside the good looks.

Deciduous to semi-evergreen, drought-tolerant, and low-maintenance once established, Cyrilla arida belongs in native plant gardens, dry borders, and sandy woodland edges, where the plant carries a piece of rare Florida scrub into the cultivated landscape.

Design Notes

Scrub Titi earns a place in xeric and native plant gardens, dry sunny borders, and sandy woodland edges. Pair the airy summer racemes with other sandhill companions such as wiregrass, saw palmetto, and blazing star, and give the plant room to show off the loose, fine-textured habit.

Drought-tolerant once established, this rare shrub also makes a conversation piece for collectors of Florida endemics and for anyone building a genuinely regional native planting.

Leaf retention shifts with climate, so expect semi-evergreen foliage in the Deep South and a more deciduous, warmly tinting habit toward the northern edge of the range.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Creamy white, summer

Flower. Slender, arching racemes of small creamy white flowers in summer, lightly fragrant and busy with pollinators.

Fruit. Small dry capsules follow the bloom and persist into fall.

Foliage. Fine-textured, narrow leaves; deciduous to semi-evergreen, with warm tints before leaf drop.

Care

Light. Full sun to partial shade, with the heaviest bloom in full sun.

Soil. Sharp drainage above all. Deep, sandy, nutrient-poor soils suit Scrub Titi best, while heavy, wet ground is poorly tolerated.

Water. Water through the first season to establish. After that, Scrub Titi is notably drought-tolerant and asks for little supplemental water.

Pruning. Prune lightly in late winter to shape or to clear dead wood. Little else is required.

Hardiness. USDA zones 7 to 9. Surprisingly cold-adaptable for a Florida scrub endemic, with success reported as far north as Atlanta.
