Rhododendron austrinum 'Reagan' is a native hybrid azalea selected in Florida near the Apalachicola River. This plant displays a rich blend of yellow petals with deep reddish-pink buds and tubes.

At a distance, the flowers can show a red-toned hue, giving it a striking appearance in garden settings. This yellow azalea grows best in filtered light and well-drained soil.

As a form of native azalea, it supports regional landscapes while offering seasonal color. It grows well with other woodland plants and performs reliably in southern planting zones.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Flowers:
In early spring, 'Reagan' produces clusters of tubular, funnel-shaped flowers that are typically yellow to orange, sometimes tinged with red. Each blossom measures up to 1.5 inches across and features elongated stamens that extend beyond the floral tube. The flowers emit a pleasant fragrance and appear before or as the new leaves emerge, creating a striking display.

Foliage:
The leaves are simple, alternate, and obovate to elliptical, ranging from 1 to 3.5 inches in length. They are dull green above with ciliate margins and turn yellow in the fall, adding seasonal interest.

Fruit:
Following the flowering period, 'Reagan' develops oblong, woody capsules measuring 0.33 to 0.5 inches long. These capsules mature in late summer, splitting into five segments to release numerous small seeds.

Care

Planting Location:
Select a site that offers partial shade, such as sun-dappled or high open shade, to protect the foliage from potential scorching in full sun. Ensure the location is sheltered from strong winds and late spring frosts, which can damage flowers and foliage.

Soil Requirements:
Plant in acidic, light, sandy, well-drained soils rich in organic matter. Amending the soil with peat moss, compost, or well-aged manure can enhance fertility and structure. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot; consider raised beds or mounds in areas with heavy clay soils.

Watering:
Maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods, to support the shallow, fibrous root system. Avoid waterlogged conditions, as Florida flame azalea does not thrive in wet, poorly aerated soils. Mulching with organic materials like pine straw or bark helps conserve moisture and regulate soil temperature.

Fertilization:
Apply a fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants in early spring. Avoid excessive use of lime or alkaline fertilizers, as they can harm the plant. Fertilizing should be done in April or May, but avoid fertilizing after July to prevent tender growth susceptible to winter damage.

Pruning:
Minimal pruning is required. Remove dead or injured branches after flowering to maintain shape and health. Avoid heavy pruning, as it can stress the plant.

Pest and Disease Management:
Monitor for common pests such as lace bugs, mites, and scale. Diseases like root rot and powdery mildew can occur, especially in poorly drained soils. Implement good cultural practices, such as proper spacing for air circulation and avoiding overhead watering, to minimize issues.
