Rhododendron bakeri x viscosum is a native azalea hybrid known for its peachy-salmon blooms and seasonal leaf color. It features strong azalea foliage and mid-to-late spring flowers.

This plant combines traits from Rhododendron viscosum (Swamp Azalea) and Rhododendron bakeri, creating a compact shrub with upright growth and fragrant flowers. It performs best in partial shade with well-drained, acidic soil.

The Swamp Azalea parent gives the plant strong adaptability in humid zones. It grows well in woodland gardens and supports pollinators. This hybrid suits native landscapes where seasonal flowering and form are valued.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Flowers:
The hybrid produces clusters of funnel-shaped flowers that can range in color from deep reddish-pink to salmon, reflecting the influence of R. bakeri. These blooms are typically not fragrant and appear in summer, adding vibrant color to the garden during the warmer months.

Foliage:
The leaves are dark green, simple, and alternate, with smooth or toothed margins. They are typically ovate to obovate in shape and measure approximately 2 to 3 inches in length. The foliage provides a lush backdrop to the summer blooms and may exhibit attractive fall colors, adding seasonal interest to the garden.

Fruit:
After flowering, the plant produces elongated capsules that contain numerous small seeds. These capsules mature in the fall and can persist into winter, adding subtle interest to the shrub's appearance.

Care

Rhododendron bakeri × viscosum is a hybrid azalea resulting from the cross between Rhododendron bakeri (Cumberland azalea) and Rhododendron viscosum (swamp azalea). This deciduous shrub combines the desirable traits of both parent species, offering gardeners attractive blooms and adaptability to various garden settings.

Planting Location:
Choose a site that provides partial shade, such as morning sun followed by afternoon shade, to protect the plant from intense midday heat. Filtered shade is ideal, especially in warmer regions, to prevent leaf scorch.

Soil Requirements:
Plant in moist, well-drained, acidic soils rich in organic matter. A soil pH between 4.5 and 6.0 is ideal. Amending the soil with organic materials like pine bark, shredded leaves, or compost can enhance fertility and structure. Ensure the planting area has good drainage to prevent root rot, as azaleas are sensitive to waterlogged conditions.

Watering:
Maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods, to support the shallow root system. Avoid overwatering, as azaleas do not tolerate soggy soils. Mulching with organic materials helps conserve moisture and regulate soil temperature.

Fertilization:
Apply a fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants in early spring, following the manufacturer's recommendations for application rates. Avoid over-fertilizing, as azaleas are sensitive to excessive nutrients. A soil test can provide specific guidance on nutrient needs.

Pruning:
Minimal pruning is required. If necessary, prune immediately after flowering to maintain shape and remove any dead or damaged branches. Avoid heavy pruning, as it can stress the plant.

Pest and Disease Management:
Monitor for common pests such as lace bugs, mites, and scale. Diseases like root rot and powdery mildew can occur, especially in poorly drained soils. Implement good cultural practices, such as proper spacing for air circulation and avoiding overhead watering, to minimize issues.
