A boldly striped form of the cast iron plant, Aspidistra elatior 'Variegata' carries the same broad, leathery, evergreen blades, each brushed lengthwise with bands of creamy white over deep glossy green. The variegation lights up a shaded corner, and the toughness is all there too: this is a near-indestructible evergreen for difficult, low-light places.

A useful quirk: the white striping holds best on lean soil, so resist the urge to feed heavily, and the plant keeps the brightest variegation when grown a little hungry and somewhat root-bound. Native in parentage to China and Japan, slow and steady, with foliage that lasts for years before aging out.

Grow variegated cast iron plant in shade to part shade, in well-drained soil, as a striking foliage accent, an evergreen groundcover under trees, or a container plant for a covered porch or a bright room indoors. The bold, architectural leaves bring structure and light to shaded plantings, and the variegation stays put rather than reverting to plain green.

Design Notes

A striking foliage accent or evergreen groundcover for shade to part shade, the cream-striped blades bringing structure and light beneath trees, along a shaded path, or in a container on a covered porch or in a bright room indoors. Grow on lean soil and a little root-bound to keep the variegation at its brightest, and pair with plain-green ferns and hostas for contrast.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Brownish-purple bell flowers at soil level

Foliage. Broad, lance-shaped, leathery, glossy dark green blades, to about two feet, rising directly from the soil in an upright, clumping habit, evergreen year round. Variegation. Bold lengthwise stripes of creamy white to pale yellow run the length of each leaf; the variegation is stable and does not revert, and shows best on lean soil. Flowers. Brownish-purple, bell-shaped flowers appear at soil level, curious but easily missed.

Care

Light. Part to deep shade, or bright indirect light indoors; direct sun scorches and fades the variegation.

Soil. Lean, well-drained soil keeps the variegation brightest; avoid rich feeding.

Water. Moderate; let the surface dry between waterings and ease off in winter. Drought tolerant once established.

Pruning. Remove old or damaged leaves at the base; wipe the leaves clean to show the variegation.

Hardiness. USDA zones 7 to 10; a houseplant in colder regions, happiest kept somewhat root-bound.
