This bamboo is a hardy low-growing species which has rather short broad leaves. It spreads by runners but is less invasive than many running bamboos. Its spread can be limited by mowing. It needs a fairly dry and acidic soil and it makes an excellent hedge. It is very resistant to bamboo mites and is commonly used as a garden subject in Japan where it is native.
