Wild Strawberry

Fragaria virginiana

$16.00

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 4-8

This is the native wild strawberry of eastern North America. The plants have trifolate leaves and produce runners which form new plants at their ends. White flowers are followed by small but sweet tasty strawberries once commonly enjoyed by country children and adults. This species figures in the breeding work done to produce some varieties of the cultivated strawberry. Grow in sun or semi-shade in well-drained soil and keep free of competing vegetation.

Care Info

Read full care instruction manual here.

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade. For optimal fruit production, provide at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. In hotter climates, partial shade during the afternoon can help protect the plant from heat stress.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-draining, loamy soil. Wild strawberries prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil with a pH range of 5.5-7.0. They are adaptable to a range of soil types, including sandy and clay soils, as long as they are well-draining. Incorporating organic matter such as compost can improve soil fertility and moisture retention.

Watering: Requires regular watering, especially during dry periods. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Mulching around the base of the plants helps retain soil moisture and reduces the need for frequent watering. Avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal diseases.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 4-8. Wild strawberries are cold-hardy and can tolerate frost. They prefer moderate temperatures and grow best in regions with cool to mild summers. While they are adaptable to various humidity levels, good air circulation is important to prevent fungal issues.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and fruit production. An additional application of compost or well-rotted manure can provide necessary nutrients. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth with reduced fruiting.

Pruning: Remove old leaves and runners in late fall or early spring to encourage healthy new growth. Pruning helps maintain a tidy appearance and promotes better air circulation, reducing the risk of disease. Removing excess runners also helps the plant focus energy on producing fruit.

Pests and Problems: Generally resilient, but can be affected by common pests like aphids, slugs, and spider mites. Ensure good air circulation around the plants to prevent fungal diseases like powdery mildew and gray mold. If pests or diseases are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Regularly inspect the plants to catch problems early.
