Wild Pennyroyal

Piloblephis rigida

| Hardiness Zones 8-10

Piloblephis rigida (commonly called wild or Florida pennyroyal) is a compact, evergreen native mint from the sandy scrublands of Florida. It forms a low, tidy mound of fine-textured foliage with a clean, resinous mint fragrance that’s noticeable when brushed or warmed by the sun.

The foliage is needle-like and dense, giving the plant year-round structure even when not in flower. From late winter into spring—often earlier than most garden perennials—it produces tight clusters of small, two-lipped flowers in soft lavender to lilac tones, lightly marked with darker spotting. These blooms are subtle but persistent, and they provide an important early nectar source for native bees and other pollinators when little else is in bloom.

Piloblephis rigida is adapted to dry, nutrient-poor environments and performs best in full sun with sharply drained, sandy or gritty soils. It is drought tolerant once established and does not tolerate wet or heavy ground. In the right conditions, it remains compact and well-behaved, making it well suited for native gardens, sandy sites, rock gardens, or naturalistic plantings where restraint is valued.

This plant was introduced to the Woodlanders catalog by Jonas Meyers, who sourced our stock directly from Ryan Schiller’s scrub-mint collection. We are pleased to carry it forward with that clear provenance, preserving both its genetics and its regional story.

A subtle but resilient native, Piloblephis rigida rewards gardeners who appreciate plants shaped by place—and who are willing to meet them on their own terms.

Flower/Foliage

Flowers

Flowering begins early—often in late winter—and can extend well into spring, with occasional continuation depending on conditions. The flowers are small but densely arranged, forming tight, upright terminal clusters at the ends of the stems. Each bloom is two-lipped, typical of the mint family, and ranges in color from soft lavender to pale lilac, often with darker purple markings on the lower lip.

While individual flowers are modest, the clustered presentation gives the plant a noticeable presence when in bloom, especially given the scarcity of flowering plants at that time of year. The flowers are held just above the foliage, creating a low but defined floral layer. They are highly attractive to native bees and other early-season pollinators, which frequently work the clusters methodically.

The bloom period is steady rather than showy, contributing more to ecological value and seasonal interest than dramatic color display.

Foliage

The foliage of Piloblephis rigida is its most defining feature. Leaves are extremely narrow—almost needle-like—short, and densely packed along the stems, giving the plant a fine, textured appearance that reads as clean and intentional in the landscape. The foliage forms a tight, mounded structure, remaining compact without the need for regular pruning.

Leaves are medium to deep green and evergreen in warm climates, providing year-round structure and contrast against coarser-textured plants. When touched or warmed by sun, the foliage releases a strong, pleasant fragrance that combines minty, herbal, and lightly resinous notes—distinct from culinary mints and more restrained.

Stems are firm and woody at the base as the plant matures, reinforcing its subshrub habit. The foliage holds well through heat and drought when grown in appropriate soils and does not collapse or thin during dry periods.

Overall, Piloblephis rigida presents as a refined, durable native with strong structural foliage and an early, ecologically important bloom—best appreciated up close and especially valuable in restrained, dry-adapted plantings where texture and form matter as much as flowers.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
