Woodlanders has long led in offering citrus and citrus hybrids hardy well beyond the usual citrus belt, and the Morton citrange is a handsome one. Like other sweet orange and trifoliate orange crosses, Morton makes an attractive ornamental evergreen, with fragrant white spring flowers and orange fruit, but the fruit here sets the cultivar apart: large, smooth-skinned, and remarkably like a true orange, with very few seeds.

Morton is said to approach edibility more closely than most citranges. Straight from the branch the flavor is still too sharp for most, but the juice, diluted and sweetened, makes a very refreshing orange ade. Cold-hardy from the trifoliate side of the family, the tree suits the collector of hardy citrus and the gardener who wants a good-looking evergreen that fruits where tender citrus cannot.

In the garden, grow Morton in full sun and sharp, well-drained soil, in the ground through zones 7 to 10 or in a large container farther north. Site where the fragrant spring bloom and the bright orange fruit can both be enjoyed, give room for a broad grower, and pair with other hardy citrus in an edible or ornamental planting.

Design Notes

A hardy, good-looking citrange for the collector and the ornamental grower who wants fruit where tender citrus cannot survive. Large, smooth, nearly seedless oranges hang on an attractive evergreen frame, cold-hardy from the trifoliate parentage. Grow in full sun and sharp, well-drained soil, in the ground through zones 7 to 10 or in a large container farther north. Site where the fragrant spring bloom and bright fruit can both be enjoyed, and pair with other hardy citrus in an edible or ornamental planting.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Flower. Fragrant white citrus blossoms in spring, washed purple on the outside of the bud and much visited by bees.

Fruit. Large, smooth-skinned, and remarkably orange-like, with very few seeds; too sharp to eat fresh, but the diluted, sweetened juice makes a refreshing orange ade.

Foliage. Attractive, glossy, evergreen citrus foliage on a vigorous, hardy small tree.

Care

Light. Full sun; at least six to eight hours of direct sun a day.

Soil. Rich, sharply drained sandy loam or a quality citrus mix; avoid heavy, wet clay.

Water. Keep evenly moist but never waterlogged, letting the top inch dry between waterings; ease off in winter.

Pruning. Prune in late winter to shape and to clear dead or crossing wood; remove any rootstock suckers.

Harvest. Fruit ripens in the cool season; too sharp for fresh eating, but fine for a sweetened orange ade.

Hardiness. USDA zones 6 to 10; hardier than most citrus from the trifoliate side, though give shelter and container culture at the cold edge.
