Nerium oleander has been grown around the Mediterranean since antiquity, the name Nerium drawn from the Greek neros, watery, for the streamsides where the shrub grows wild. 'Variegata' brings that ancient toughness together with luminous foliage: narrow, leathery leaves edged in creamy white around a deep green center, held in whorls along the stems so the whole shrub seems lightly frosted even when out of flower.

Through summer the shrub carries soft pink blooms in showy clusters at the branch tips, funnel-shaped and lightly ruffled, standing out against the pale-margined leaves. The effect is cooler and more refined than the plain green forms, the variegation lifting the color even on overcast days.

Like all oleanders, 'Variegata' is admired at a careful distance. Every part of the plant is poisonous, a trait that has followed oleander through centuries of cautionary lore and that conveniently keeps browsing deer away. That same resilience makes the shrub a dependable performer in hot, dry, and coastal settings where little else stays evergreen.

Grow 'Variegata' where the foliage can do its quiet work: as a bright screen, a container specimen, or a foliage anchor in a warm border, ideally in full sun to hold the crispest leaf color. Pair with lantana, rosemary, or other drought-tolerant companions, and in cold-winter regions move potted plants to shelter before hard frost.

Design Notes

The reason to plant 'Variegata' is the foliage, so give the shrub full sun and room to show the cream-and-green leaves at eight to ten feet tall and nearly as wide. The variegation reads as a soft glow at a distance, useful for lightening a dark corner or edging a hot, paved area.

Set the pale leaves against deeper greens or purples for contrast, and combine with lantana, rosemary, or agave for a low-water planting. Keep the shrub away from paths used by children and pets, since every part is toxic, and overwinter container plants under cover where frost is hard.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Single to semi-double, soft pink

Flower. Funnel-shaped, single to semi-double blooms in soft pink, two to three inches across, gathered in showy terminal clusters from late spring into fall and lightly fragrant.

Fruit. Paired slender follicles that ripen brown and split to release silky, wind-borne seed; toxic, like the rest of the shrub, and often trimmed away.

Foliage. The signature feature: leathery, lance-shaped leaves four to six inches long, deep green centered and edged in creamy white to yellow, evergreen and glossy for year-round structure.

Care

Read our full care guide

Light. Full sun keeps the variegation crisp and flowering strong; part shade is tolerated with softer color and fewer blooms.

Soil. Well-drained soil of almost any kind, including poor, sandy, alkaline, or salty ground.

Water. Water deeply while establishing; mature plants are drought tolerant and dislike soggy soil.

Pruning. Shape in late winter or early spring and deadhead to extend bloom; wear gloves, as the sap is toxic.

Hardiness. USDA zones 8 to 10, hardy to about 15F with possible dieback in the coldest spells; mulch roots in borderline areas.
