'Casille' arose spontaneously, a chance hybrid among three of the southeastern native azaleas: the white, lemon-scented Alabama azalea, Rhododendron alabamense; the fragrant pink Piedmont azalea, R. canescens; and the fiery, unscented Oconee azalea, R. flammeum. From that three-way mingling came a deciduous shrub that blooms in mid-spring in a lively pastel blend, the flowers shifting through pink, white, and soft yellow with a subtle sweetness inherited from the fragrant parents. An exclusive Woodlanders introduction, the plant was named by George Mitchell for his wife.

Spontaneous hybrids like this one are part of what makes the southeastern azaleas so endlessly interesting. Where the ranges of the wild species overlap, the bees mix the pollen and nature runs experiments no breeder would think to try, and now and then a seedling appears worth naming and keeping. 'Casille' is one of those happy accidents, carrying a little of each parent, the fragrance of alabamense and canescens softened over the bright color of flammeum, and blooming in the window when the spring azalea season is at the fullest.

The tricolor flowers open in mid-spring on an upright frame of six to ten feet, the pastel blend reading softer and more nuanced than any single-colored azalea, with a subtle fragrance to reward a close approach. Early bees and butterflies work the trusses. As with all azaleas, every part of the plant carries grayanotoxins and is poisonous if eaten, so the shrub is one for spring beauty rather than any use, and best kept clear of children and livestock.

Grow 'Casille' as the native azaleas are grown: in a semi-shady site such as the high, filtered shade of tall pines, in acidic, well-drained soil mulched with pine needles, and with supplemental water on hand for dry spells. Site the shrub at a woodland edge or in a native border where the pastel trusses can be met at close range, and pair with other native azaleas to stretch the fragrant spring season. A one-of-a-kind Woodlanders selection with a personal story behind the name.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Pink, white, and yellow tricolor blend, lightly fragrant, mid-spring

Flower. Trusses of pastel flowers in a shifting blend of pink, white, and soft yellow, opening in mid-spring with a subtle sweet fragrance. A tricolor effect softer than any single-colored azalea, drawing early bees and butterflies.

Fruit. A small dry capsule; grown for flowers rather than fruit.

Foliage. Deciduous leaves on an upright, six to ten foot frame.

Care

Light. Part shade. A semi-shady site such as the high, filtered shade of tall pines suits the plant best, with morning sun and afternoon shade in warmer gardens.

Soil. Acidic, well-drained, humus-rich soil, pH about 4.5 to 6.0, mulched with pine needles. Amend with pine bark or leaf mold, and avoid alkaline ground.

Water. Keep the shallow roots evenly moist, and apply supplemental water in dry spells, since the plant will not tolerate drought stress. Mulch to hold moisture and cool the ground.

Pruning. Little needed; remove dead or crossing wood just after flowering, since next year's buds form on the current season's growth.

Hardiness. USDA zones 6 to 9. Every part is poisonous if eaten.
