A brand-new intergeneric hybrid, and a small horticultural triumph. Dr. Tom Ranney of the North Carolina State University research station in Fletcher succeeded in crossing two icons of the Southern flora: the legendary Franklinia alatamaha, the lost Franklin tree that has not been seen in the wild since the early 1800s, with the native loblolly bay, Gordonia lasianthus. The result is xGordlinia grandiflora, a bigeneric cross that carries the best of both parents.

Intermediate between the two, xGordlinia bears large, showy, camellia-like white flowers with golden stamens from late summer into fall, when little else of the tea family is blooming. The glossy foliage is semi-evergreen, holding late and often coloring red before dropping, and the plant grows faster and proves far easier to please than the notoriously temperamental Franklinia.

Building a small tree or large shrub of twenty to thirty feet, xGordlinia suits a specimen spot in a lawn, a mixed border, or a woodland edge in sun to part shade and moist, acidic, well-drained soil. The fragrant flowers draw bees and butterflies, and the long bloom season and fall color earn the plant a place where a distinctive flowering tree is wanted.

Woodlanders is pleased to offer this exciting hybrid, and looks forward to the verdict of serious plant enthusiasts and everyday gardeners alike.

Design Notes

A distinctive flowering specimen for a lawn, a mixed border, or a woodland edge in sun to part shade and moist, acidic, well-drained soil. Give xGordlinia room for a small tree of twenty to thirty feet, and site where the late-summer white flowers and the fall color can be enjoyed. Faster and far easier to grow than the temperamental Franklinia parent, and a conversation piece with real botanical pedigree.
