A small, bright green agave with a clean white stripe down the center of each short, broad, toothed leaf, Agave lophantha 'Splendida' is a compact, clumping selection of a species native to South Texas and Mexico. The variegated rosettes stay neat and low, a jewel-box agave for a trough, a container, or the front of a hot, sunny bed.

The selection has a Woodlanders pedigree. This smaller, tighter clone was found some years ago near Jacksonville, Florida, by our friend Joe Levert of Augusta, Georgia, keeper of a remarkable collection of palms, citrus, and other subtropicals on the campus of Aquinas High School. Joe shared the plant with Ted Stephens of Nurseries Caroliniana, who named the agave 'Splendida' and is credited with the introduction.

Like most agaves, 'Splendida' wants sun and sharp drainage, asking little once settled. The clumping habit makes for easy increase, and the white-striped rosettes look their best where the foliage can be read up close. The listed height is for the rosette; like all agaves, the flower stalk rises far taller, once, before that rosette gives way to a ring of offsets. Hardy to the upper single digits, a fine choice for a xeric bed, a rock garden, or a pot to move under cover in the coldest spells.

Design Notes

A jewel-box agave for a trough, a container, a rock garden, or the front of a hot, sunny bed, where the white-striped rosettes can be read up close. The clumping habit fills in steadily and divides easily. Pair with sedums, small yuccas, and gravel-garden companions, and keep within reach of a hand rather than a path, since the leaves are toothed.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Greenish-yellow flowers on a tall spike, once at maturity (monocarpic)

Foliage. Short, broad, toothed leaves of bright green, each marked with a clean white center stripe, forming a small, neat rosette. Flower. Like all agaves, monocarpic: a tall spike of greenish-yellow blooms rises once at maturity, after which that rosette dies, leaving offsets. Habit. A compact, freely clumping selection, far smaller than the typical species.

Care

Light. Full sun to light shade; at least six hours of direct sun keeps the rosette tight and the stripe bright.

Soil. Sandy or gravelly, sharp-draining mix; avoid wet ground.

Water. Drought tolerant; water sparingly and let the soil dry fully between waterings, especially in winter.

Pruning. Remove spent leaves as needed; handle the toothed edges with care.

Hardiness. USDA zones 7 to 10, hardy to roughly 10°F; move container plants under cover in the coldest spells.
