Crossvine is a high climbing semi-evergreen vine with bright orange trumpet shaped flowers. It is a good flowering vine that climbs high by tendrils and hold-tights and is effective if planted on a fence or trellis in sun or semi-shade. It flowers heavily in early summer and sporatically later. It does sucker freely from the roots and can become a problem in beds. Now widely available, Crossvine was virtually unavailable from nurseries when Woodlanders began offering it in the early 1980's. This large flowered selection is somewhat between the varieties 'Atrosanguinea' and 'Tangerine Beauty' (which see) being red-orange with a yellow throat. It is from the garden of Helen Fredel in College Station, Texas and it apparently grew previously on an old two story house in her neighborhood. It was shared with us by Greg Grant who recognized that it had larger flowers and good ornamental qualities.

PLANT DETAILS

Hardiness Zones: 6 - 9

Soil: Well-drained and Fertile

Sun: Full Sun and Part Shade

Seasonal Behavior: Semi-Evergreen

Growth Rate: Fast

Height at Maturity: 20 - 30 Feet

Spread at Maturity: 6 - 9 Feet

Flower: The 'Helen Fredel' cultivar features showy, tubular flowers in shades of coral to reddish-orange, often with a yellow throat. Blooms appear in clusters from spring through early summer, exuding a light, pleasant fragrance. The flowers attract pollinators, especially hummingbirds and butterflies, adding vibrancy to any garden.

Foliage: The evergreen foliage consists of glossy, dark green, leathery leaves that form in pairs along the stems. In colder climates, the leaves may turn a bronze or purplish hue in fall, adding seasonal interest. Each leaf is about 2–4 inches long, and the dense foliage provides excellent coverage for privacy or screening.

Sunlight: Thrives in full sun to partial shade, with best flowering in sunnier locations.

Soil: Prefers well-drained, fertile soil but can tolerate a range of soil types, including sandy or clay soils.

Watering: Water regularly to establish, especially in dry conditions. Once established, it’s fairly drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering.

Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring to support growth and blooming, though it generally requires minimal fertilization.

Pruning: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to control size and shape. Remove dead or weak stems to promote healthier growth.

Support: This vigorous vine requires a sturdy support, such as a trellis or fence, to climb and showcase its unique, trumpet-shaped flowers.

Pests/Diseases: Generally resistant to pests and diseases, though watch for aphids or scale on occasion.
