1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 5-8

Heaths and heathers come in many species and varieties. Most are not well-suited to the heat and humidity of the southern U.S. but this hybrid between two European species, Erica erigena and E. carnea, is quite satisfactory. It is a low mounding evergreen shrub to 24 inches. It has small dark green needle-like leaves and rose-pink flowers. Plant in semi-shade, with well-drained acid soil. Dirr (Manual of Woody Landscape Plants) says: If one wants to grow a heath in the southeastern United States, this species represents a credible starting point."

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade. It thrives best with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily, which encourages abundant flowering. However, in hotter climates, some afternoon shade may be beneficial to prevent the foliage from scorching.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-draining, acidic to neutral soil. Ideal pH levels range from 4.5 to 6.5. Incorporating organic matter such as peat moss, leaf mold, or compost into the soil helps maintain the right acidity and improves soil structure. Avoid heavy clay soils or poorly drained soils, as these can cause root rot.

Watering: Requires moderate watering. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during the first year after planting to help the roots establish. Once established, Erica x darleyensis is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during dry periods.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 5-8. It is a cold-tolerant plant that can withstand winter temperatures, which makes it an excellent choice for winter gardens. In warmer climates, ensure the plant receives adequate water and is protected from extreme heat.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants in early spring. An additional application after flowering can promote healthy growth. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowers.

Pruning: Prune lightly after the flowering season to remove spent blooms and to maintain a compact shape. Regular pruning encourages bushier growth and more prolific blooming in the following season. Avoid cutting back into old wood, as Erica does not regenerate well from old growth.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant, but watch for potential issues such as aphids, spider mites, and fungal diseases like powdery mildew. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal problems. If pests are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Regularly inspect the plant to catch any issues early.
