1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 5-9

This perennial Hibiscus hybrid is a 2010 Texas Superstar award winner. It was selected by Greg Grant and is floral sport or perhaps a seedling of 'Flare' a H. moscheutos hybrid developed by Dr. Sam McFadden of Somerville, Tennessee. 'Peppermint Flare' is notable for the very large 8-10 inch faint pink to white flowers with a red center and streaks of scarlet in the petals. It is said to be a relatively short perennial 4-5 feet tall. Like most native perennial Hibiscus species it is probably happy in very wet sites or in ordinary sunny garden situations with adequate water.

PLANT DETAILS

Hardiness Zones: 5 - 9

Soil: Well-drained and Moist

Sun: Full Sun and Part Shade

Seasonal Behavior:

Growth Rate: Moderate

Height at Maturity: 4 - 6 Feet

Spread at Maturity: 3 - 4 Feet

Foliage: The leaves are dark green, with a glossy texture, providing a lush backdrop for the flowers.

Flowers: Produces large, striking flowers that feature a mix of white, pink, and red streaks, resembling peppermint candy. The blooms are typically 6-8 inches in diameter and appear from mid-summer to early fall.

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade. For optimal growth and the best flower production, plant 'Peppermint Flare' in a location that receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. While it can tolerate some partial shade, more sun will encourage more abundant blooms.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-draining, moist soil. 'Peppermint Flare' Hibiscus prefers fertile, loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH, ideally between 6.0 and 7.0. While it can adapt to various soil types, rich soil with good organic matter will promote the healthiest growth and most vibrant flowers. Ensure the soil remains moist, especially during the growing season.

Watering: Requires regular watering. This Hibiscus hybrid prefers consistently moist soil, especially during the peak growing and flowering seasons. Water deeply and regularly to maintain moisture levels, but avoid waterlogging the soil, which can lead to root rot. Mulching around the base of the plant can help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 5-9. 'Peppermint Flare' Hibiscus is adapted to a range of temperatures and can withstand colder winters, particularly if the roots are mulched heavily to protect them from freezing. It thrives in warm, humid conditions typical of its tropical and subtropical origins but can also perform well in temperate climates.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage healthy growth and flower production. Additional feeding during mid-summer can help sustain flowering. Use a fertilizer formulated for flowering plants, preferably one with lower nitrogen to avoid excessive foliage growth at the expense of blooms.

Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Cut back old stems to about 6 inches above the ground to encourage new shoots and maintain a tidy appearance. Deadheading spent flowers throughout the blooming season can encourage more blooms and keep the plant looking its best.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant, but may occasionally be affected by aphids, spider mites, or whiteflies. Good air circulation around the plant helps prevent fungal diseases such as powdery mildew. If pests or diseases are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Regular monitoring and maintaining garden hygiene can help prevent issues.
