Hardiness Zones: 6 - 8

Soil: Well-drained

Sun: Part Shade and Full Shade

Seasonal Behavior: Evergreen

Growth Rate: Slow

Height at Maturity: 10 - 15 Feet

Spread at Maturity: 6 - 8 Feet

Foliage: The leaves are glossy, dark green, and spiny, providing a dense, evergreen appearance year-round.

Flowers: Produces small, white flowers in the spring. As a female plant, Ilex spinigera will produce bright red berries in the fall if a male holly is nearby for pollination.

Light Requirements: Prefers partial shade to full shade. Ilex spinigera thrives in shaded environments, often under the canopy of larger trees. While it can tolerate some direct sunlight, particularly in cooler climates, too much direct sunlight can cause leaf scorch, so it’s best to provide filtered or dappled light.

Soil Requirements: Prefers well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Ilex spinigera grows best in rich, loamy soil with a pH range of 5.0-7.0. It is adaptable to various soil types, including sandy and clay soils, as long as they drain well. Adding organic matter, such as compost or leaf mold, can improve soil structure and provide essential nutrients for healthy growth.

Watering: Requires regular watering, especially during dry periods. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Ilex spinigera benefits from a consistent moisture level, particularly during its establishment period and the growing season. Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain soil moisture and protect the roots from temperature extremes.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 6-8. Ilex spinigera is well-suited to temperate climates and can tolerate cold winters, though it should be protected from harsh winter winds and extreme cold. It prefers moderate humidity levels and can adapt to varying moisture conditions, though it thrives best in environments with consistent humidity.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and berry production. Organic fertilizers, such as compost or well-rotted manure, are also beneficial for maintaining soil fertility. An additional application of fertilizer in mid-summer can help sustain the plant during its active growing period.

Pruning: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Since this is a female plant, minimal pruning is recommended to preserve flowers and maximize berry production. Regular pruning can help maintain the plant's shape and remove any dead or damaged branches. After the berries have formed, pruning can also be done to maintain the plant’s aesthetic appeal.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant, but may occasionally encounter issues with common garden pests like aphids or scale insects. Good air circulation around the plant can help prevent fungal diseases such as leaf spot or powdery mildew. If pests or diseases are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Regular monitoring and good garden hygiene are key to maintaining plant health.
