The United States National Arboretum in Washington, D.C. sits on 446 acres of rolling ground above the Anacostia River, a place where serious horticultural work has gone on quietly for the better part of a century. Camellia japonica 'Anacostia' takes both the name and the pedigree from that institution, selected at the Arboretum for cold hardiness and reliable performance at the northern edge of camellia country.

Camellias reached the Western world in the eighteenth century, carried from China and Japan by plant hunters who knew at once they were looking at something extraordinary. In Asia the plants had been cultivated for well over a thousand years, as ornamentals, as the source of tea and camellia oil, and as subjects of poetry and painting, and by the time they reached Europe and the American South they had already been refined into thousands of named forms. 'Anacostia' marks a distinctly American chapter of that long story, a selection made not for the mild winters of Kyushu or the Azores but for the colder, more demanding conditions of the mid-Atlantic and upper South.

The flowers are deep red, semi-double to formal in arrangement, dense and layered enough to look almost architectural in the winter garden. They open from late winter into early spring, at the precise moment the garden most needs them, set against dark, glossy evergreen leaves that earn their place through the rest of the year without asking for attention. This is a camellia bred over centuries to do exactly one thing well, and the plant shows it.

Design Notes

Site 'Anacostia' where the deep red flowers can be read against a light background in late winter: a white wall, pale gravel, or the silver bark of a nearby birch or stewartia. The slow, naturally upright form suits a sheltered spot against a north or east-facing wall, where cold protection and shade align. For companions, the hellebores share the same winter flowering window and woodland taste, while Daphne odora brings fragrance in the same season at a complementary scale. In a larger camellia collection, 'Anacostia' works as the cold-hardy anchor, the plant that earns the right to grow at the zone's edge and stretches the camellia season into conditions that defeat less proven cultivars.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Deep red, semi-double to formal double, 3 to 4 inches, late winter to early spring

Flower. Deep red, semi-double to formal double, roughly three to four inches across, the petals densely and symmetrically arranged. Bloom comes late winter into early spring, often February through April depending on the season, and holds color well in cool weather. Not fragrant. Chosen at the US National Arboretum for cold hardiness and dependable performance in zone 7.

Foliage. Elliptic to ovate leaves, three to four inches long, finely toothed, deep green and high-gloss, dense and evergreen for strong structure in the winter garden. New growth emerges faintly bronzed before maturing to deep green.

Care

Light. Part shade to dappled sun; morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal, shielding the flowers from freeze-thaw and the leaves from scorch.

Soil. Moist, well-drained, strongly acidic soil around pH 5.5 to 6.5, amended with pine bark or leaf mold; avoid alkaline ground, which brings on chlorosis.

Water. Keep evenly moist through the first seasons and summer dry spells; mulch heavily to cool the roots, and never let the plant sit in standing water.

Pruning. Prune just after flowering, before next season's buds set; thin crowded growth for air, and shape as wanted.

Hardiness. Selected for cold hardiness and dependable through USDA Zones 7 to 9; shelter from winter sun and wind at the northern edge.
