The Ponderosa lemon is grown for spectacle as much as for the kitchen. The fruits are enormous, often two to four pounds each, thick-skinned and gloriously bumpy, hanging like green-gold cannonballs among the glossy leaves. For all the size, the flesh is tart, juicy, and true lemon in flavor, and works in any recipe a regular lemon would, with the novelty of a single fruit that can fill a hand.

The history is tangled, and rather fun. Discovered as a chance seedling in the late nineteenth century, the Ponderosa lemon was long taken to be a cross of lemon, Citrus limon, and citron, Citrus medica, and is still sold under the old name Citrus x limon 'Ponderosa'. Recent genetic work tells a different story, pointing instead to a citron and a pomelo, Citrus maxima, with little true lemon in the mix at all. The century-old name has stuck all the same, and the giant, fragrant fruit remains as striking as ever.

An evergreen reaching six to twelve feet, the Ponderosa lemon is frost-tender and best kept to the warmest gardens, zones 9 to 11, or grown in a container that can be carried indoors for winter. The purple-tinged white flowers come nearly year-round, sweetly fragrant, so the plant is rarely without bloom, fruit, or both at once. Site in full sun and sharp, slightly acidic soil, protect from frost, and enjoy a citrus that is equal parts conversation piece and working lemon.

Design Notes

Grown as much for show as for fruit, the ponderosa lemon is a natural container plant for a sunny patio, a conservatory, or a bright indoor spot, and an evergreen specimen in frost-free gardens. The huge, bumpy lemons and the near year-round fragrant bloom make the plant a true conversation piece; site where the flowers can be smelled and the fruit admired at close range. In zones 9 to 11 grow in the ground in full sun and sharp soil; farther north, keep in a large pot to carry indoors before frost.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Flower. Large, fragrant white flowers tinged purple in the bud, borne in clusters nearly year-round and much visited by bees.

Fruit. Enormous, thick-skinned, bumpy lemons weighing two to four pounds each, tart and juicy, used exactly as a regular lemon but on a giant scale.

Foliage. Dark green, glossy, lance-shaped evergreen leaves, a lush frame for the outsized flowers and fruit.

Care

Light. Full sun; give at least six to eight hours of direct sun, and a bright south-facing window or grow light indoors.

Soil. Rich, well-drained, slightly acidic loam, pH about 5.5 to 6.5; sharpen heavy soil with grit and organic matter.

Water. Keep evenly moist but never waterlogged, letting the top inch dry between waterings; reduce in winter, and mulch to hold moisture.

Pruning. Prune in late winter to shape, to open the canopy, and to keep container plants in bounds; remove suckers from the base.

Hardiness. USDA zones 9 to 11; frost-tender, so grow in a container to overwinter indoors in cooler regions.
