Originally sourced from Kitt Peak, Arizona by Bob McCartney, and last offered in the 1993 Woodlanders catalog under "Woody Lilies."

Back from the botanical vault. Dasylirion texanum, commonly known as Texas Sotol, is a striking, drought-tolerant plant of central and western Texas and the Chihuahuan Desert into northern Mexico. This long-lived, architectural species forms a symmetrical rosette of slender, serrated, blue-green leaves that radiate like sunbeams, rising over time from a short, stout trunk. Texas Sotol is a true standout in xeriscapes and rock gardens, and the fermented heart even yields sotol, a traditional desert spirit akin to mezcal.

This particular form carries a Woodlanders story. Bob McCartney, a co-founder with a knack for finding the exceptional in the overlooked, collected the plant at Kitt Peak, Arizona. Texas Sotol last appeared in our 1993 catalog, and after three decades we are glad to bring the selection back for gardeners who like their landscapes with a touch of wild elegance and a deep-rooted history.

Hardy through USDA zones 7 to 10 and unfazed by intense sun, lean soils, and long dry spells, Texas Sotol suits collectors of Southwestern natives, modern garden designers, and anyone after a sculptural statement. Quantities are limited, and the current plants are roughly four years old.

Design Notes

Texas Sotol is built for the hot, dry, and sculptural: a xeriscape, a gravel or rock garden, a sunny slope, or a modern architectural planting where the radiating rosette can be seen in the round. Give the plant room, since the fine-toothed leaves reward a little distance.

Pair with agave, yucca, nolina, prickly pear, and desert grasses, and use as a living focal point beside stone or a dry streambed. Sharp drainage and full sun are the whole secret, and the spiny rosette shrugs off deer.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Creamy white on a tall spike, summer

Foliage. A basal rosette of slender, blue-green leaves, each edge lined with fine, evenly spaced teeth, forming a wide, cupped desert spoon at the base.

Flower. At maturity a towering stalk, nine to fifteen feet, rises from the rosette, topped with a dense two to three foot spike of small creamy flowers. Plants are male or female.

Habit. Slow and long-lived, building a short, stout trunk over many years beneath the radiating crown.

Care

Light. Full sun, the more the better, even in the hottest sites.

Soil. Lean, gritty, sharply drained soil. Sand, gravel, or rocky ground is ideal; wet or heavy soil is the one real enemy.

Water. Very drought-tolerant once established. Water sparingly to settle in, then let the ground dry fully between soakings.

Pruning. None needed. Remove spent lower leaves or a finished flower stalk for tidiness, wearing gloves against the toothed margins.

Hardiness. USDA zones 7 to 10, tolerant of both hard sun and brief cold.
