Turn up the brilliance in your woodland garden with this rare and radiant selection of Rhododendron austrinum. Unlike the typical golden-orange hues of the species, this exceptional variety flaunts pure yellow blooms—a buttery, luminous glow that lights up spring like sunshine through a canopy.

Native to the southeastern United States, R. austrinum is a deciduous azalea known for its early blooms, sweet fragrance, and impressive pollinator appeal. Hummingbirds and butterflies flock to its tubular flowers, making it as lively as it is lovely.

This pure yellow form is a true standout, offering a clean, bright floral display that pairs beautifully with the oranges and corals of other native azaleas—or steals the show all on its own. Best planted in dappled shade, with moist, acidic, well-draining soil, it’s a reliable performer that brings charm to understory plantings and woodland borders. Rhododendron austrinum (Pure Yellow) is hardy in USDA Zones 6b to 9a.

A collector’s gem and a pollinator magnet, this unique selection of Rhododendron austrinum is an instant woodland classic.

Flower Description:
The blooms of Rhododendron austrinum (Pure Yellow) are a dazzling display of vivid, canary-yellow trumpets, grouped in dense, upright clusters. Each flower features gracefully extended stamens that arc outward like sunbeams, adding an airy elegance to the bold color. The petals are gently ruffled and open wide, giving the entire inflorescence a luminous, almost incandescent quality. Their sweet fragrance attracts hummingbirds and butterflies in early spring, making them as functional as they are stunning.

Foliage Description:

The foliage is a fresh, bright green with a subtle gloss, composed of narrow, lance-shaped leaves arranged in charming whorls around the stems. The texture is smooth and slightly leathery, with faintly indented veins adding gentle structure. In spring, the young leaves emerge just as the flowers are blooming, enhancing the contrast and visual drama of this eye-catching azalea.
