American yellowwood is one of the loveliest and least common of our native trees, a broad, round-headed deciduous tree grown for three good seasons of interest. In late spring, usually May, long pendulous panicles of white, pea-like flowers hang from the branch tips, sweetly fragrant and wisteria-like, a spectacle in the years the tree chooses to flower heavily. Summer brings clean, bright-then-deep green compound foliage, and autumn a dependable, clear golden yellow that is among the best fall color of any hardwood. The smooth gray bark, beech-like, holds the winter garden.

The name comes from the wood: freshly cut, the heartwood is a clear yellow that once yielded a natural dye. Cladrastis kentukea is native to scattered limestone woodlands of the southern and central United States, genuinely rare in the wild, yet long a favorite ornamental far to the north, hardy well into the cold. The tree takes many soils but is happiest on the rich, well-drained, higher-pH ground of the native haunts.

In the garden, give yellowwood a sunny, open spot with room to spread the wide, low crown, a lawn specimen, a shade tree, or the centerpiece of a large border. Prune only in summer, since the tree bleeds sap heavily if cut in late winter, and train early for strong, wide-angled branches, as the wood can be brittle. A refined, four-season native worth the wait for the flowering years.

Design Notes

A refined, four-season native for a sunny, open site with room for the wide, low, round-headed crown: a lawn specimen, a shade tree, or the centerpiece of a large border. Give rich, well-drained soil, ideally on the higher-pH ground the tree favors in the wild, and full sun for the best flowering and fall color. Prune only in summer, since yellowwood bleeds sap heavily if cut in late winter, and train early for strong, wide-angled limbs, as the wood is somewhat brittle. Lovely underplanted with shade-tolerant natives once the canopy fills in.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

white, fragrant, panicles, May, hanging clusters

Flowers. In late spring, usually May, long pendulous clusters of creamy white, pea-like flowers hang from the branch tips in fragrant panicles up to twelve to fifteen inches long. The effect is wisteria-like and sweetly scented, drawing bees and other pollinators, though the heaviest flowering tends to come every second or third year.

Foliage. The compound leaves emerge bright yellow-green and mature to a rich deep green, each with seven to eleven ovate leaflets for a light, graceful canopy. Autumn brings a brilliant, clear yellow, true to the common name and among the most dependable fall color of any hardwood.

Fruit. Slender, flat seedpods follow the flowers, ripening brown by late summer and hanging lightly into winter, a quiet note against the smooth gray bark.

Care

Light. Full sun to part shade; the fullest flowering and best fall color come in full sun.

Soil. Moist, well-drained, rich ground; adaptable to clay, loam, or sand, and unusually tolerant of both acid and alkaline soil, even urban conditions.

Water. Water consistently through the first season to settle a deep root system; once established the tree takes moderate drought, with a soaking in prolonged dry spells.

Pruning. Prune in summer or right after flowering, never in late winter, since yellowwood bleeds sap heavily; train early for wide branch angles to guard against the brittle wood.

Hardiness. USDA zones 4 to 8; very cold-hardy, though a hard winter can reduce the following spring's bloom.
