Summersweet, or sweet pepperbush, is one of the most useful of the native shrubs for moist, shaded ground, and 'Hummingbird' is the compact, free-flowering selection that made the species a garden staple. Like the straight Clethra alnifolia, this is a stoloniferous deciduous shrub that forms colonies in moist, acid soil, valued above all for the upright spikes of intensely fragrant white flowers that perfume the whole garden in the heat of summer, when little else is blooming.

'Hummingbird' stays low and dense, spreading steadily by rhizome into a broad colony, and opens earlier than is typical for the species. The selection was made by the late Fred Galle of Callaway Gardens, Georgia, and Michael Dirr calls the plant "one of the finest, compact deciduous shrubs available to gardeners." Native to the eastern United States, summersweet feeds bees and butterflies through midsummer and asks little in return.

In the garden, plant 'Hummingbird' in sun to part shade and moist, acid soil, at a pond edge, in a rain garden, along a shaded walk, or massed as a low, fragrant groundcover-shrub. Site where the summer perfume can be met in passing, and give steady moisture; the colony knits together into a dependable, sweet-scented planting.

Design Notes

A compact, fragrant native for the moist, shaded corners of the garden: a pond edge, a rain garden, a shaded walk, or a low mass beneath taller shrubs and trees. 'Hummingbird' spreads steadily by rhizome into a broad, dense colony, so give room where a drift is welcome, or contain the edges in a tighter bed. Plant in sun to part shade and moist, acid soil, and site where the powerful summer perfume can be met in passing. Pairs beautifully with ferns, itea, and other moisture-loving natives, and feeds pollinators through midsummer.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

White, fragrant, racemes, summer

Flower. Upright, bottlebrush spikes of pure white, powerfully sweet-scented flowers through mid to late summer, when little else is in bloom; a magnet for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.

Fruit. Small, dark seed capsules follow and persist as dry brown spikes into winter, holding a little structure through the cold months.

Foliage. Glossy, dark green, toothed leaves on a low, dense, colony-forming shrub, turning clear yellow in fall.

Care

Light. Full sun to part shade; the fullest flowering comes in more sun, though a little shade is welcome in hot gardens.

Soil. Moist, acid, humus-rich ground, pH about 5.0 to 6.5; tolerant of wet soil, a natural for rain gardens and boggy edges.

Water. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially through the first season and in summer heat; mulch to hold moisture and keep the roots cool.

Pruning. Little needed; cut out dead or weak stems in late winter, and shear spent flower spikes to tidy the plant. Renews easily from the base.

Hardiness. USDA zones 5 to 9.
