Clinopodium coccineum 'Ohoopee Yellow' wears a contradictory name, since this is a clear, bright yellow-flowered form of a mint shrub that usually blooms in scarlet. The yellow form was originally shared with us by Ken Wurdak, who found the plant in Tattnall County, Georgia. We later lost our stock and got the clone back from Mike Creel, who had received starts from us years before. Such are plant sagas.

A showy, long-flowering native for a sunny, sandy site, scarlet calamint in all its color forms grows wild across the southern United States on deep, very sandy soils. Woodlanders introduced the several southern Clinopodium species to gardeners back in the 1980s, and stubbornly kept using J. K. Small's genus name Clinopodium while botanists spent a couple of decades insisting the genus should be Calamintha or Satureja. Now the authorities agree Clinopodium is correct. Ah, vindication.

Give 'Ohoopee Yellow' full sun and fast-draining, sandy soil, and site the subshrub where the long season of clear yellow bloom and the hummingbird traffic can be enjoyed up close: a hot bank, a gravel or xeric border, a rock garden, or the front of a sunny native bed. Deer tend to leave the foliage alone, and the plant asks almost nothing once settled. Pair with salvias, grasses, and other sun-and-drought lovers.

Design Notes

A soft-yellow native for the hot, dry, sharply drained places softer plants cannot hold: a hot bank, a gravel or xeric border, a rock garden, or the front of a sunny native bed, sited where the long season of bloom and the hummingbird traffic can be enjoyed up close. Deer tend to leave the foliage alone, and the plant shrugs off drought once settled. Pair 'Ohoopee Yellow' with salvias, grasses, and other sun-and-drought lovers.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Bright yellow tubular, late spring to fall

Flower. Clear, bright yellow tubular flowers over a long season from late spring into fall, an unusual color break from the scarlet species and a steady draw for hummingbirds.

Foliage. Small, semi-evergreen leaves that deer tend to leave alone; the foliage thins or drops through a cold winter and returns in spring.

Habit. A loose, open subshrub three to five feet high, at home on lean, sandy ground.

Care

Light. Full sun for the heaviest bloom.

Soil. Deep, sharp, fast-draining sandy ground, lean and acidic; wet or heavy soil is poorly tolerated.

Water. Low once established; drought is taken in stride on well-drained sites.

Pruning. Shear lightly in late winter to keep the frame dense, and deadhead to prolong bloom.

Hardiness. USDA zones 6 to 9.
