Cornus florida, the flowering dogwood, is the beloved understory tree of the eastern North American woods, widely planted for the great show of white spring bracts (the true flowers are the small green knot at the center), and, in selections like this one, pink. A deciduous woodland tree that grows in moist, well-drained soil in sun or high, dappled shade, the dogwood rewards careful planting: set the root flare high, and never plant too deep.

'Welch's Junior Miss' is a fine pink-flowered selection of Deep South provenance, which makes this cultivar the best pink dogwood for the warmer zones, where many northern pinks color poorly in the heat. The tree was selected by the late 'Chick' Welch of Wilmer, Alabama, near Mobile, and carries a warm, clear pink that holds up in the southern spring.

Site 'Welch's Junior Miss' as a specimen near a patio, a path, or a window framed for spring, or at a woodland edge among native azaleas and other understory companions, where the pink bracts can be read against a darker backdrop. Give high shade or morning sun with afternoon shelter in the Deep South, and the glossy red fall fruit will draw songbirds while the foliage turns wine-red.

Design Notes

A small native flowering tree for a specimen spot near a patio, a path, or a window framed for spring, or for a woodland edge among native azaleas and other understory companions, where the pink bracts read against a darker backdrop. 'Welch's Junior Miss' holds its color in southern heat where northern pinks fade; give high shade or morning sun with afternoon shelter, and let the red fall fruit feed songbirds.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Pink bracts, early to mid spring

Flower. Four broad, clear pink bracts cupped around a small green knot of true flowers, opening in early to mid spring, often before the leaves.

Fruit. Clusters of glossy red drupes ripen in fall, bitter to people but a favorite of songbirds.

Foliage. Oval, deep green leaves with the arching veins of the genus, turning wine-red to burgundy in autumn.

Care

Read our full care guide

Light. High, dappled shade or morning sun with afternoon shelter; lean shadier in the Deep South.

Soil. Moist, well-drained, acidic ground rich in organic matter; dogwoods resent both drought and wet feet.

Planting depth. Set the root flare slightly high and never plant too deep; a buried trunk sends dogwoods into slow, easily-missed decline.

Water. Keep evenly moist through the first seasons and in summer heat; mulch the root zone, held back from the trunk.

Hardiness. USDA zones 6 to 9; a warm-climate pink.
