Crataegus harbisonii is a small, thorny, deciduous hawthorn with unusually large leaves for the genus, white spring flowers, and red fall fruit. Behind that modest description stands one of the rarest trees in North America: Harbison's hawthorn was perhaps once fairly common around central Tennessee, but is now all but extinct in the wild.

The hawthorn expert Ron Lance, after intensive searches of the formerly known and likely sites around Nashville, could locate only a couple of surviving wild specimens. The plants Woodlanders offers are progeny of those few remaining trees, propagated by Mr. Lance. Because Harbison's hawthorn is not yet federally listed as endangered, growing this tree is entirely legal, and a real chance to hold, and perhaps help save, a genuinely imperiled native.

Site Harbison's hawthorn in full sun to part shade in well-drained soil, as a specimen or in a native and conservation planting, where the white flowers feed spring pollinators and the red haws draw birds. A collector's tree with a serious conservation story behind every plant.

Design Notes

A small native hawthorn for a specimen spot, a native or wildlife planting, or a conservation garden, where the white spring flowers feed pollinators and the red haws feed birds. Give full sun to part shade and well-drained soil, and site the thorny branches back from busy walkways. Growing Harbison's hawthorn is a small act of conservation for a tree nearly lost from the wild.
