The parsley haw, Crataegus marshallii, is a distinctive and graceful small native tree, named for the shiny, deeply dissected, parsley-like leaves that set the whole genus apart at a glance. White flowers centered with rosy-red stamens open in spring, followed by bright red fruit that lingers into fall.

Native to the Piedmont and Coastal Plain of the southeastern United States, where the parsley haw grows on moist sites, this hawthorn is one of the easiest of a famously confusing genus to identify, and one of the most ornamental. The fine-textured foliage, the airy spring bloom, and the red haws make a refined small tree for average garden and residential soils.

Site the parsley haw as a specimen near a patio or path, at a woodland edge, or in a native or wildlife planting, where the lacy leaves and spring flowers can be read up close and the red fruit can feed the birds. Give full sun to part shade and steady moisture, and enjoy one of the most distinctive of the native hawthorns.

Design Notes

A refined small native for a specimen spot near a patio or path, a woodland edge, or a native and wildlife planting, where the lacy foliage and spring flowers can be read up close and the red haws feed the birds. The parsley haw takes ordinary garden and residential soils in stride, given full sun to part shade and steady moisture. Site the thorny branches back from busy walkways.
