Ilex glabra, the inkberry or gallberry, is one of the finest native broadleaf evergreens of eastern North America, rooted in the sandy, acid soils of the coastal plain from Nova Scotia and New Jersey south through Florida and across the Gulf states. In wet pinelands, pocosins, and boggy edges this holly has long been a defining presence, and wherever the ground runs lean, sandy, and moist, inkberry settles in.
This particular plant is the male form of inkberry, and the role is as quiet as it is essential. Male inkberry bears no black berries, and none of the rare white-fruited forms treasured by collectors, but the flowers carry the pollen without which no female holly will fruit. Gardeners planting inkberry for those berries need at least one male in range, for balance and for continuity.
Beyond that reproductive job the male inkberry offers plenty in the garden. The evergreen foliage is dense, glossy, and spineless, forming a neat rounded shrub that answers well to pruning and shaping, and unlike many hollies inkberry tends to hold the leaves well down the stems, staying fuller and cleaner than lesser evergreens. Full sun to part shade suits the plant, given acidic soil that holds some moisture, and mass plantings, low hedges, and pairings with azaleas and camellias all come easily.
The flowers, modest as they look, carry real weight. In spring the nectar of inkberry draws bees, and from that flow comes the famed gallberry honey, a mild, pale honey long associated with the Southern pinewoods. Bees, bogs, and hollies have worked together across that region for centuries, and a male inkberry quietly underwrites the whole exchange, feeding the hive and setting the stage for the female shrubs to fruit.
