Penstemon digitalis is one of the most adaptable of the native beardtongues, a clump-forming perennial of moist meadows, prairies, and open woods across the eastern and central United States. 'Husker Red', selected at the University of Nebraska and named Perennial Plant of the Year in 1996, keeps all the toughness of the wild species but wears it in deep wine-red: a basal rosette of glossy maroon foliage that holds color from spring through fall.

In early to midsummer, slender stems rise two to three feet above the burgundy rosette, carrying open panicles of tubular white flowers, often blushed the faintest pink, each with the small bearded staminode that gives the beardtongues their name. Against the dark leaves the pale bells read especially clean, and bees and the occasional hummingbird work the flowers steadily.

The genus name Penstemon means five stamens, a nod to that fifth, sterile, bearded stamen, and digitalis salutes the foxglove-like flower, the source of the common name foxglove beardtongue. In the garden 'Husker Red' earns a place for foliage as much as bloom, a wine-dark anchor that sets off silver, chartreuse, and hot color through the season.

Give full sun for the deepest leaf color and well-drained soil, and the plant asks little more. The dry seed capsules stand tan through winter and scatter seedlings at the base, so leave a few heads for the look of the cold months or shear them off to keep a colony in bounds. Pair 'Husker Red' with little bluestem, coreopsis, salvias, and other sun-lovers, and enjoy a native that feeds pollinators and shrugs off deer.

Design Notes

Wine-dark foliage for the sunny border. Grow 'Husker Red' at the front or middle of a sunny bed, a cottage border, or a native and pollinator planting, where the burgundy rosette anchors the composition and the white summer bells rise above. The dark leaves set off silver, chartreuse, gold, and hot color, and pair beautifully with little bluestem, coreopsis, salvias, and catmint. Give full sun for the deepest leaf color, leave a few seed heads for winter structure and gentle self-sowing, and let the plant feed bees while shrugging off deer.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

White to pale pink tubular flowers, early to midsummer

Flowers
Tubular white bells, now and then blushed with pink, carried in open panicles well above the foliage through early and mid summer. Each holds the small bearded staminode that earns the beardtongues their name, and the stand draws bees and the occasional hummingbird. Against the dark leaves below, the white reads especially clean.

Foliage
The signature, and the reason for the name. Glossy maroon to deep burgundy leaves, a wine-dark basal rosette running up the stems, holding their color best in full sun and the cool of spring and fall. The selection was made at the University of Nebraska and went on to be named Perennial Plant of the Year, on the strength of that foliage as much as the bloom.

Fruit
Dry seed capsules follow, ripening tan and standing through winter on rigid stems, good for the look of the cold months and for the seedlings they scatter at their feet.

Care

Read our full care guide

Light. Full sun for the deepest burgundy foliage; tolerates light shade with greener leaves.

Soil. Average to moist, well-drained ground; adaptable, but avoid soggy winter soil.

Water. Even moisture while establishing, then fairly drought tolerant.

Pruning. Deadhead after bloom for tidiness, or leave the seed heads for winter and self-sowing; cut old stems in late winter.

Hardiness. USDA zones 5 to 8.
