Piloblephis rigida, wild or Florida pennyroyal, is a compact evergreen native mint from the sandy scrublands and pine flatwoods of Florida. The plant forms a low, tidy mound of fine, needle-like foliage that carries a clean, resinous, minty fragrance, released at a brush of the hand or on a warm afternoon in the sun.

From late winter into spring, earlier than most garden perennials, tight terminal clusters of small, two-lipped flowers open in soft lavender to lilac, lightly freckled with darker purple. The bloom is quiet rather than showy, but arrives when little else is flowering, and native bees and other early pollinators work the clusters steadily.

Adapted to dry, nutrient-poor ground, Florida pennyroyal wants full sun and sharp, sandy or gritty drainage, and shrugs off drought once established, but will not abide wet or heavy soil. Given those lean conditions the plant stays compact and well-behaved, a natural for native gardens, sandhill and scrub-inspired plantings, rock gardens, and sharply drained beds where restraint is the point.

The strong scent is more than pleasant. The Miccosukee and Seminole brewed the leaves into a minty tea and tucked the aromatic foliage into bedding to repel fleas, and the resinous oil has long interested those looking for a native insect repellent.

This plant came to the Woodlanders catalog through Jonas Meyer, who sourced our stock directly from Ryan Schiller's scrub-mint collection, and we are pleased to carry it forward with that clear provenance, preserving both the genetics and the regional story. A subtle but resilient native, Florida pennyroyal rewards gardeners who value plants shaped by place and are willing to meet them on their own terms.

Design Notes

A structural accent for lean, sunny ground. Use Florida pennyroyal as a fine-textured evergreen accent rather than a filler, where the compact, mounded form and needle-like foliage bring restraint and clarity: a sandhill or scrub-inspired planting, a rock garden, a sharply drained bed, the front of a border, or a low, repeating element along a path. The fine foliage sets off broader-leaved natives, and because bloom comes so early, the plant pairs best with summer and fall performers that follow. Give full sun and sharp, sandy drainage, and keep vigorous, moisture-loving neighbors away, since rich or irrigated ground undoes the plant. Used thoughtfully, Florida pennyroyal contributes year-round form, an early, ecologically valuable bloom, and a distinctly Southeastern sense of place.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Soft lavender to lilac two-lipped flowers, late winter into spring

Flower. Small, two-lipped flowers in tight terminal clusters, soft lavender to pale lilac freckled with darker purple, held just above the foliage from late winter into spring; quiet but valuable, since the bloom arrives when little else feeds the early pollinators.

Foliage. Extremely narrow, almost needle-like, short leaves densely packed along the stems, medium to deep green and evergreen in warm climates, releasing a strong minty, herbal, lightly resinous scent when brushed or warmed.

Habit. A low, tidy, mounded subshrub, woody at the base with age, holding form through heat and drought without pruning.

History & tradition

In the pinelands and scrub of Florida, the Miccosukee and Seminole brewed the aromatic leaves of Florida pennyroyal into a minty tea, flavored soups and foods with the herb, tucked the fragrant foliage into bedding to repel fleas, and turned to the plant for colds, fevers, skin complaints, and sores, as well as a reviving smelling-salt and a ceremonial emetic. Though unrelated to the true pennyroyal of Europe, the plant carries the same caution and should be avoided during pregnancy. These are historical and traditional uses only. Nothing here is medical advice, and Florida pennyroyal is offered as an ornamental, aromatic, and ethnobotanical plant rather than as a remedy.
