'Varnadoe's Moonbeam' is a luminous early-spring selection of the Florida azalea, Rhododendron austrinum, prized for a soft, glowing color less common in the species. Rather than the fiery orange of many forms, the flowers open in clear golden yellow brushed with apricot and orange in the throat, over reddish tubes, a warm but refined coloring that seems to catch and hold the light, moonlit rather than blazing, against the still-bare spring woodland.

The selection carries real Southern azalea history. This form was made by Aaron Varnadoe of Colquitt, Georgia, who opened his nursery in 1960 and spent years collecting seed and cuttings of native azaleas across south Georgia, mastering the difficult art of propagating them. Varnadoe came to specialize in Rhododendron austrinum, R. canescens, and R. flammeum, raising countless thousands of seedlings and choosing the best for rootability and unusual color; 'Moonbeam' stands among the finest. The clone was later distributed through Superior Trees in Florida, carrying that legacy forward.

Like the species, this azalea flowers in early spring, often before full leaf, in generous clusters at the branch tips, and the blooms are lightly fragrant and highly attractive to the first pollinators of the year. The species name austrinum means southern, and the genus name Rhododendron means rose tree in Greek. As with every wild azalea, the shrub is grown for the flowers rather than any edible use; all Rhododendron carry grayanotoxins in leaf and nectar and should not be eaten.

Growing into a loosely upright, deciduous shrub of roughly six to ten feet, 'Varnadoe's Moonbeam' reads best when allowed to develop a natural, open form rather than sheared. The soft gold color makes the shrub a fine partner for ferns, trilliums, and spring ephemerals, and a striking one against dark evergreen backdrops such as Illicium or holly. Massed, the early bloom throws a wash of gentle light across the woodland floor. Give dappled shade, acidic and well-drained soil, room for air to move through the branches, and a cool mulch over the shallow roots. Autumn brings muted yellow and orange tones before leaf drop.
