The swamp rose is one of the few roses that truly loves wet feet, a tall, graceful native shrub of the eastern United States that grows wild along pond edges, streambanks, and in the low, seasonally flooded ground where garden roses would drown. Reaching four to eight feet on arching, sparingly thorny canes, the plant opens fragrant, single, clear pink flowers through the summer, each a simple five-petaled saucer around a boss of gold stamens, a soft, untamed beauty far from the tidy hybrid tea.

A true native, the swamp rose earns a place for far more than the flowers. The blooms feed bees and butterflies through the warm months, and in fall the branches hang with bright red hips that feed songbirds and small mammals into winter, and that people can gather too, tart and rich in vitamin C for jelly or tea. Few native shrubs give so much to a wildlife or pollinator planting while asking only for moisture and sun.

Where most roses demand sharp drainage, the swamp rose asks the opposite. The plant thrives in moist to wet, even boggy soil, takes heavy clay and standing water in stride, and is one of the best roses going for a rain garden, a pond margin, a low sunny swale, or any spot that stays damp. Give full sun for the heaviest bloom, though light shade is tolerated in the warmest gardens, and expect strong, disease-resistant growth that shrugs off the blackspot and mildew that trouble ordinary roses.

Use the swamp rose to naturalize a wet, sunny corner: a streambank, a pond edge, a rain garden, or the low end of a native border, where the summer pink and the fall hips can be enjoyed and the roots can hold damp ground. Pair with buttonbush, swamp milkweed, and other moisture-loving natives, give room for the arching, gently suckering habit, and enjoy a rose that turns a wet problem into a season of bloom and berries.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Single, pink, fragrant, summer

Flower. Fragrant, single, clear pink flowers, each a simple five-petaled saucer around a boss of gold stamens, opening through the summer and feeding bees and butterflies.

Fruit. Bright red hips follow in fall, feeding songbirds and small mammals, and edible for people too, tart and rich in vitamin C for jelly or tea.

Foliage. Deciduous leaves of seven to nine slim leaflets on tall, arching, sparingly thorny canes, notably resistant to the blackspot and mildew that trouble garden roses.

Care

Read our full care guide

Light. Full sun for the heaviest bloom, though light shade is tolerated in warmer climates.

Soil. Moist to wet soil. The swamp rose grows naturally in swamps, bogs, and wet meadows, takes heavy clay and standing water in stride, and suits rain gardens, low spots, and pond margins.

Water. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially while establishing. Unlike most roses the plant is not drought tolerant and prefers wet feet, thriving where natural water flow or steady rainfall keeps the ground damp.

Pruning. Minimal. Remove dead or damaged wood in late winter, shape lightly after bloom if wanted, and leave the hips to form for the birds and for fall interest.

Hardiness. USDA zones 5 to 9. Resistant to the blackspot and mildew of ordinary roses; aphids may appear but are usually kept in check by beneficial insects in a native planting.
