'Hodnett' is a Southern blueberry with a wild streak in the parentage, a hybrid that crosses the classic highbush blueberry, Vaccinium corymbosum, with the black highbush blueberry, Vaccinium fuscatum, of the Southeastern swamp margins. The result is a tough, productive, regionally adapted shrub built for the acid soils and humid summers that can defeat ordinary highbush kinds. The genus name Vaccinium is the old Latin word for the plant, and corymbosum describes the loose, branching flower clusters, the corymbs, that hang along the stems in spring.

Early to mid-spring brings delicate, urn-shaped, bell-like flowers in pale pink to white, mildly fragrant and thick with native bees. Clusters of medium-sized, deep blue berries follow in early to midsummer, balanced between sweet and tart and as good in a pie or a jar of preserves as eaten straight from the bush, if the songbirds leave any behind.

The foliage carries the year: glossy medium green through spring and summer, then a warm turn to red, orange, and deep burgundy in fall. Deciduous across most of the range and only semi-deciduous in the mildest zones, 'Hodnett' offers ornament as well as harvest, and the upright, moderately vigorous frame settles neatly into a border, a hedgerow, or a small orchard.

Give the plant full sun for the heaviest fruit, or a little afternoon shade in the hottest gardens, in acid, well-drained soil rich in organic matter with a pH between 4.5 and 5.5. Mulch with pine bark or pine straw to hold moisture and keep the roots cool, and though 'Hodnett' is partly self-fertile, a second blueberry blooming at the same time brings more and larger berries. For the native-minded gardener, the plant feeds pollinators, songbirds, and people in a single, well-behaved shrub.

Design Notes

Grow 'Hodnett' in a sunny edible border, a hedgerow, or a small orchard, in acid, well-drained, organically rich soil, with a little afternoon shade welcome in the hottest gardens. The plant is partly self-fertile but crops more heavily beside a second blueberry that blooms at the same time, so plant in groups. Deciduous across most of the range and semi-deciduous only in the mildest zones, with pale spring bells for pollinators, summer fruit for songbirds and people, and red-to-burgundy fall color; mulch with pine bark or straw to keep the roots cool.
