The muscadine is the South's own grape, and 'Triumph' is one of the finest for the home garden. Vitis rotundifolia is a vigorous native vine of the southeastern United States, the first North American grape brought into cultivation, long grown for thick-skinned, intensely flavored fruit and the honeyed wines of Scuppernong fame. 'Triumph', a bronze-fruited selection, carries that heritage forward with unusual quality and ease.

The berries of 'Triumph' are large, sweet, and bronze-green, thick-skinned in the muscadine way, with a rich, musky flavor prized for fresh eating, juice, jelly, and wine. The vine is vigorous and notably resistant to the mildew and rot that trouble bunch grapes, and, unlike many older muscadines that carry only female flowers, 'Triumph' is self-fertile, so a single vine sets a full crop, with even heavier yields where a second muscadine grows nearby.

Broad, rounded, glossy leaves with toothed edges clothe the sprawling vine and turn soft gold in fall. Small greenish-white flowers open in late spring, quiet but fragrant and worked by bees, and the fruit ripens over a long window from late summer into early autumn, feeding people and wildlife alike.

Give 'Triumph' a sturdy arbor, a trellis, or a strong fence in full sun, and room for a vigorous climber to run. The vine thrives across the warm South in well-drained soil, asks little once established, and rewards a hard annual pruning with a heavy crop. A handsome, productive backbone for an edible landscape, and a living piece of Southern agricultural history.

A productive native vine for a sturdy arbor, a trellis, or a strong fence in full sun, and the backbone of an edible landscape. Give 'Triumph' room to run and a hard annual pruning for a heavy crop. Self-fertile, so a single vine fruits well, though a second muscadine nearby lifts the yield further. Thrives across the warm South in well-drained soil, and feeds people and wildlife from late summer into fall.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Greenish-white, fragrant, late spring

Foliage: Vitis rotundifolia ‘Triumph’ features broad, rounded, deep green leaves with a glossy finish that adds lush texture to any landscape. The leaves are leathery and durable, with serrated edges, creating a bold, architectural quality that complements the vine’s sprawling nature.

Flower: In late spring, ‘Triumph’ produces small, inconspicuous greenish-white flowers clustered along the vine. Though not showy, these fragrant blossoms attract pollinators and mark the beginning of the fruiting process, filling the air with a subtle, earthy sweetness.

Fruit: By late summer to early fall, the vine yields large clusters of bronze-green muscadine grapes. Each grape has a thick skin, typical of muscadines, with a rich, sweet flavor and juicy interior. The fruit ripens to a deep bronze hue, creating a striking contrast against the dark green foliage. These grapes are versatile, ideal for fresh eating, juicing, and winemaking, embodying the robust, earthy essence of Southern muscadines.

Care

Read our full care guide

Light. Full sun, at least six to eight hours, for the best growth and fruit.

Soil. Well-drained, slightly acidic soil, pH about 5.8 to 6.5; adaptable but best in loam rich in organic matter.

Water. Water regularly through the first season to build deep roots; drought-tolerant after, though steady moisture helps fruiting.

Pruning. Prune hard every year in late winter, thinning to an open framework for air, light, and a heavy crop.

Harvest. Pick from late summer into early fall, when the bronze berries are plump, fragrant, and slightly soft.

Hardiness. USDA zones 7 to 9; a Southern native at home in heat and humidity.
