A fine-textured native yucca from the Texas hill country. Yucca constricta, the Buckley yucca, forms a stemless or short-stemmed rosette, single or clustered, of many very narrow, blue-green, spine-tipped leaves edged with curling white marginal filaments. The species honors the nineteenth-century naturalist Samuel Botsford Buckley, and the epithet constricta notes the narrowed leaves that give the plant a softer, more delicate look than the bolder yuccas.

In late spring and summer, tall, stiff stalks rise well above the foliage carrying spikes of showy, greenish-white, bell-shaped flowers, a bright display on an architectural frame. Like all yuccas, the plant depends on the yucca moth for pollination, a small nightly partnership that sets the seed.

A heat-tolerant plant from the drier parts of Texas, where the Buckley yucca grows on rocky limestone soils, this yucca asks only for full sun and sharp drainage. Woodlanders grows plants from seed collected in the Edwards Plateau of central Texas, a genuine wild provenance.

Set Yucca constricta as an architectural accent in a rock garden, a gravel or xeric planting, or a hot, dry bank, among agaves, sedums, and ornamental grasses. Drought-tolerant and deer-resistant once established, and striking for the fine, filament-edged rosette and the tall summer flower spikes. Site back from paths, since the leaf tips are sharp.
