A native lily that answers the rain. Zephyranthes atamasco, the atamasco lily or rain lily, is a bulbous perennial of the amaryllis family, native to moist woods and meadows of the Southeastern United States. The name atamasco comes from the Powhatan people of the Virginia tidewater, an old word carried into botany, and the plant has also long been called Easter lily for the season of bloom.

From grassy, deep green foliage rise slender stalks carrying solitary, funnel-shaped white flowers flushed pink at the base, two to three inches across. Each bloom lasts only a few days, but flushes follow rain through spring, and the plant naturalizes into cheerful colonies over time. The flowers are lightly fragrant and draw bees and butterflies.

The atamasco lily is an easy, dependable native for a moist, sunny to part-shaded spot: the front of a native bed, a woodland edge, a rain-garden margin, or a naturalized drift in lawn or meadow. The plant returns year after year and asks little once settled. Note that the bulbs are poisonous if eaten, so site away from where livestock graze.

One of the most rewarding native bulbs for the Southeast, Zephyranthes atamasco brings a clean, luminous white to the spring garden and a reliable rhythm of bloom tied to the weather itself.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Showy white funnelform flowers in spring

Zephyranthes atamasco produces elegant, funnel-shaped, white flowers with a hint of pink at the base of the petals. The flowers typically measure 2-3 inches in diameter and bloom in clusters on slender stalks that rise above the grassy foliage. Each bloom lasts for only a few days, but the plant often produces multiple waves of blooms throughout the growing season, especially after rainfall. The blossoms usually appear in early spring, with occasional repeat blooms in summer or fall, depending on the climate.

The flowers are mildly fragrant and attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Their delicate, star-like form contrasts beautifully against the plant’s deep green, strap-like leaves, adding charm and grace to any garden or naturalized area.

Care

Read our full care guide

Light. Full sun to part shade; a little afternoon shade helps the flowers last in the hottest gardens.

Soil. Moist, well-drained soil; tolerant of brief wet spells, good near water or in a rain garden.

Water. Keep evenly moist in the growing season; bloom follows rain and deep watering.

Pruning. Deadhead spent flowers; let the foliage die back naturally to feed next year's bulbs.

Hardiness. USDA zones 6 to 9; mulch the bulbs in the coldest gardens.
