Flower, Fruit and Foliage

A streamside endemic now reduced to a handful of wild sites in Texas, Louisiana, and northern Mexico, Physostegia correllii sends sturdy, sometimes purple-flushed stems three to four feet tall (occasionally far taller in rich wet ground) from a spreading rhizome. Leaves are sessile, lance-shaped, widest at the middle, sharply toothed, and an unusually dark glossy green for the genus. The bloom is the show: dense terminal spikes of inch-long tubular flowers in cool purplish-pink, the throats freckled with darker streaks and the lower lip flaring into a small landing platform for bumblebees.

Like its kin, the species earns the genus's other common name, obedient plant — the individual flowers sit on hinged pedicels and stay put when nudged left or right around the spike. Bloom runs midsummer into early fall. Fruit is the typical mint-family quartet of small dry nutlets nested in the persistent calyx.

Plant Success Tip #1

Unpack Promptly

Carefully unpack your plant as soon as it arrives. Check the roots and soil to ensure they are still moist. If the roots feel dry, lightly mist or water them before proceeding with planting or temporary storage.

Plant Success Tip #2

Acclimate Your Plant

Allow your plant to adjust to its new environment by placing it in a sheltered spot for a day or two before planting, especially if it has traveled a long distance. Avoid exposing it to extreme temperatures right away.

Plant Success Tip #3

Follow Planting and Care Instructions

Plant your new arrival as soon as possible, following the specific care guidelines provided. If planting outdoors isn’t immediately possible, temporarily pot it in well-draining soil to maintain health until conditions are suitable.
