Trithrinax campestris, the Caranday Palm, comes from the dry grasslands of Córdoba Province in central Argentina, where the species stands in open, frost-bitten country. A medium-sized trunked palm with stiff, glaucous blue fan leaves tipped in sharp points, and a trunk wrapped in a dense weave of fiber and old leaf-base spines. Slow, very tough, drought-hardy, and hardier in cold than most of the palms gardeners know, which is why the palm is so sought after by collectors, and so seldom found.
Woodlanders offered the Caranday Palm in small numbers for the palm society members and plant hunters who already knew what they were asking for. Full sun and sharp drainage are the whole of the recipe. A reference listing for a palm we have grown; interest helps decide what returns.
