Eastern bluestar is the bluestar most gardeners know, a robust native perennial with broader, willowy oval leaves and the clear blue, star-shaped flowers that name the genus, carried in clusters at the stem tips in spring. Amsonia tabernaemontana grows happily in deep, moist soil in part shade, and rewards almost any reasonable site with bloom and easy good health.

Allan Armitage, in Herbaceous Perennial Plants, puts the species on his short list: "Blue star flower is always on my list of 'no brainers.' Plant and get out of the way." The willowy summer foliage turns soft yellow in fall, the milky sap keeps deer and rabbits off, and a settled clump is as close to trouble-free as a perennial comes. Native across the eastern United States.

Give eastern bluestar room to round into a shrubby clump at the middle of a border, in a native planting, or at a woodland edge, lovely with spring bulbs and early perennials and a quiet gold note in autumn. A light shear after bloom keeps the stems upright.

Design Notes

A shrubby clump for the middle of a border, a native planting, or a woodland edge, lovely with spring bulbs and early perennials and carrying a quiet gold note into autumn. Eastern bluestar takes deep, moist soil and part shade in stride and stands up to deer and rabbits thanks to the milky sap. A light shear after bloom keeps the stems from flopping.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Sky-blue star-shaped flowers in spring

Flowers. Clusters of clear, sky-blue, star-shaped flowers, about half an inch across, at the stem tips in spring. Foliage. Broader, willowy, oval leaves on upright stems forming a shrubby clump. Fall color. The foliage turns a soft, warm yellow in autumn, a quieter gold than the threadleaf bluestars but a welcome late note.

Care

Light. Full sun to part shade; afternoon shade prevents leaf scorch in hot climates.

Soil. Deep, well-drained, loamy soil; adaptable to clay and poor ground, best in rich, moist soil.

Water. Keep moist through the first season; moderately drought tolerant once established.

Pruning. Cut back by about a third after flowering to keep the clump upright; cut to the ground in late fall or winter.

Hardiness. USDA zones 3 to 9.
