Flame acanthus, better known as hummingbird bush, is a tough, airy deciduous shrub for hot, dry places, hung from late spring until frost with slender orange to red tubular flowers that ruby-throated hummingbirds cannot resist. Small, pointed leaves give a light, open texture, and the long bloom season makes Anisacanthus wrightii one of the best hummingbird plants for the southern garden.

Native to the streambanks and rocky ground of Texas and the southwestern United States, hummingbird bush shrugs off heat and drought once established and asks for little. Pale, shredding bark adds quiet winter interest after the leaves fall, and no obvious pest or disease troubles the shrub. Compact enough for a large container, hummingbird bush makes a fine patio plant where the birds can be watched up close.

Plant flame acanthus in a sunny, well-drained spot, in a xeric border, a pollinator garden, or a hot bank, among other sun-and-drought lovers like salvias and agastache. A hard cut in late winter keeps the shrub dense and floriferous. Hardy in zones 7 to 10.

Design Notes

A long-blooming native for a xeric border, a pollinator garden, a hot bank, or a large patio container, where the orange-red flowers can be watched for hummingbirds up close. Pair flame acanthus with salvias, agastache, and other sun-and-drought lovers, and let the airy frame and shredding winter bark earn a place year round. A hard late-winter cut keeps the shrub dense and floriferous.
