A twisting, weeping take on the classic boxwood, Buxus sempervirens 'Unraveled' breaks the upright, clipped mold of the genus entirely. The branches arch and twist into a loose, cascading, almost sculptural form, dense with the familiar small evergreen leaves but carried on a frame that drapes rather than stands. A selection from the JC Raulston Arboretum, 'Unraveled' brings a wild, playful edge to a plant usually grown for rigid formality.

Hardy, evergreen, and low in fuss, 'Unraveled' keeps a compact three-to-four-foot scale and asks little beyond well-drained soil. The arching habit makes the shrub a standout specimen, a soft note at the front of a border, a draping accent over a wall or large container, or a curiosity in a rock garden, equally at home in formal and informal settings.

Like all boxwoods, 'Unraveled' is evergreen, deer-resistant, and best given good air circulation, since the genus can be troubled by boxwood blight. Grown in sun to shade, the twisting form holds year-round structure with a character all its own.

Small, inconspicuous greenish flowers in spring

Foliage. Small, glossy, dark green evergreen leaves, the classic boxwood foliage, carried on twisting, arching stems. Habit. The signature: a loose, weeping, sculptural form that drapes and twists rather than standing stiffly upright, compact at three to four feet, a Raulston Arboretum selection. Flowers. Small, inconspicuous, greenish flowers in spring, of little ornamental note.

Care

Light. Part to full sun, or shade; some afternoon shade prevents scorch in hot climates.

Soil. Well-drained, loamy soil, neutral to slightly alkaline; avoid acidic or waterlogged ground.

Water. Keep evenly moist while establishing; moderately drought tolerant after, with watering in dry spells.

Pruning. Little needed; the weeping form is the point. Trim lightly in early spring to shape, and ensure good air circulation to discourage boxwood blight.

Hardiness. USDA zones 5 to 9; shelter from drying winter winds to prevent winter burn.
