Carex flaccosperma, the blue wood sedge, is a clump-forming native of the Southeastern woodlands grown for cool, glaucous, blue to blue-green foliage. The blades are wide for a sedge, to half an inch, faintly quilted along the veins, and they catch the light with a soft powdery sheen that lifts a shaded planting where most greens recede.

An easy, well-mannered groundcover for shade, the blue wood sedge knits into low colonies along a shaded path, beneath shrubs, or through a woodland border, and reads beautifully against ferns, hostas, and the dark greens of broadleaf evergreens. Happiest in moist soil and part to full shade, the plant is drought-tolerant once established, and a fine native alternative to non-native groundcovers in the cool, dim corners of a garden.

Design Notes

Mass the blue wood sedge as a native groundcover in shade, along a shaded path, beneath shrubs, or through a woodland border, where the glaucous blue-green blades lift the dim corners that defeat ordinary greens. Lovely woven among ferns, hostas, hellebores, and the dark foliage of broadleaf evergreens, and a fine native stand-in for non-native shade groundcovers. Give moist, humus-rich soil and part to full shade; drought-tolerant once established, and easily divided to spread a planting.

Care

Light. Part to full shade; tolerates morning sun, but hot direct sun scorches the blades.

Soil. Moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil; happiest where the ground stays cool and damp.

Water. Keep evenly moist while establishing; drought-tolerant once settled, though best with steady moisture.

Grooming. Comb out or trim tired foliage in early spring to refresh the clump; divide to spread.

Hardiness. Reliable through USDA Zones 4 to 9, semi-evergreen to evergreen in the warm South.
