Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Filicoides', the fernspray hinoki cypress, is grown for one quality above all: foliage held in flattened, fern-like sprays that gather along the branches in dense, layered clusters and cascade in soft, pendulous fans. The effect is unmistakably oriental, deep green the year round, and unlike anything else in the conifer border.

The species comes from Japan, where hinoki cypress has been revered for centuries. The timber, close-grained, fragrant, and famously durable, is the wood of temples and shrines, and the tree carries associations of endurance and sanctity that run deep in Japanese culture. From this venerable species gardeners have selected scores of forms; 'Filicoides', whose name means fern-like, was chosen for the curious congested sprays that set the plant apart, and the cultivar has long been prized in Japanese gardens and as a subject for bonsai.

In the garden, the fernspray hinoki makes a slow, characterful evergreen, in time an open shrub or small narrow tree, the branches growing a little straggling and irregular with age, which is part of the charm. Site where the textured foliage can be read at close range, beside a path, a gate, or a quiet corner, and give a darker backdrop to set off the green. Handsome with stone, with moss, and among other fine-textured evergreens in a Japanese-inspired planting. The crushed foliage is aromatic.

Design Notes

A slow, sculptural evergreen for a spot where the unusual fern-like foliage can be studied at close range: beside a path, a gate, an entry, or a quiet corner of a courtyard. Give a darker backdrop, a wall or broadleaf evergreens, to throw the green texture forward, and pair with stone, moss, and other fine-textured plants in a Japanese-inspired planting. Equally at home as a long-lived container or bonsai subject.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Foliage. The signature of the plant. Tiny scale leaves crowd into flattened, fern-like sprays that layer along the branches and hang in soft fans, rich deep green above with pale markings beneath, aromatic when crushed.

Cones. Small, rounded, woody cones about a third of an inch across ripen brown, scattered among the foliage on an established plant.

Habit. Slow and upright when young, broadening with age into an open shrub or small narrow tree of irregular, picturesque branching.

Care

Light. Full sun to part shade; the densest, best-colored foliage forms in full sun, with light afternoon shade welcome in hot climates.

Soil. Moist, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral ground; avoid heavy, wet clay, which the roots resent.

Water. Water regularly through the first seasons to settle a deep root system, keeping the soil evenly moist; once established the plant takes brief dry spells but is happiest with steady moisture.

Pruning. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to shape and to lift tired branches; avoid hard cutting into bare old wood, which is slow to break.

Hardiness. USDA zones 4 to 8. Shelter from harsh, drying winter wind, and mulch the root zone in the coldest gardens.
