A silvery, soft-textured juvenile-foliage form with an unusual and well-documented history. 'Shiva' was originally presumed to be Chamaecyparis thyoides, the Atlantic white cedar, but now appears to be a form of Chamaecyparis pisifera, the sawara cypress of Japan. The plant was found as a seedling on Cape Cod by Rekha Morris of Pendleton, South Carolina, and introduced by Clarence Towe of Walhalla, South Carolina. By all signs this curious form will never become a large tree.

The appeal lies in the foliage: fine, feathery, silver-blue juvenile needles, soft to the touch and held in dense, billowing sprays that catch the light and lend a misty, cloud-like quality to a planting. Sawara cypress and the many garden forms have long been valued in Japan and beyond for exactly this kind of textural softness, a foil for bolder leaves and darker greens.

Compact and slow, 'Shiva' suits the smaller garden where a full-sized conifer would overwhelm. Site where the silver-blue color and soft texture can be appreciated, against a dark backdrop of broadleaf evergreens or beside stone, and pair with fine-textured companions in a mixed border or a Japanese-inspired planting. A choice and uncommon plant for collectors of dwarf and unusual conifers.

Design Notes

A compact, slow conifer for the smaller garden, where the silver-blue color and soft, feathery texture earn a place a full-sized tree could not. Site against a dark backdrop of broadleaf evergreens or beside stone so the misty foliage stands forward, and pair with fine-textured companions in a mixed border, a rock garden, or a Japanese-inspired planting. A choice subject for collectors of dwarf and unusual conifers.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

red, yellow

Foliage. The whole point of the plant. Fine, feathery, silver-blue juvenile needles, soft to the touch, held in dense billowing sprays that catch the light and read as a tinted, misty cloud.

Cones. Tiny, rounded, pea-sized cones may appear on older plants, ripening brown, though this selection is grown for foliage rather than fruit.

Habit. Compact, slow, and softly mounded, showing no sign of making a large tree.

Care

Light. Full sun to part shade; full sun keeps the silver-blue color and dense texture at their best, with light shade welcome in the hottest gardens.

Soil. Moist, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral ground; the soft juvenile foliage can scorch in dry, baking sites.

Water. Water regularly while the plant settles, keeping the soil evenly moist; once established the conifer takes short dry spells but prefers steady moisture.

Pruning. Little needed; trim lightly in early spring to shape, cutting only within the green, since old bare wood breaks back slowly.

Hardiness. USDA zones 3 to 8. Shelter from harsh, drying winter wind in the coldest gardens.
