The turtlehead is named twice over for things that go quiet. The genus Chelone is the Greek word for tortoise, after a nymph who mocked the marriage of Zeus and Hera and was turned, for her insolence, into a creature that carries her house and holds her tongue; one look at the flower, a hinged, swollen, pink-and-gaping thing that seems about to either speak or bite, and you see why the name stuck. The species honors John Lyon, the Scottish plant hunter who worked the southern Appalachians in the footsteps of Bartram and Michaux. Lyon collected this turtlehead somewhere in the mountains around 1812 without recording quite where, noting only in his catalog that here was a new species, and a beautiful one; his friend Frederick Pursh later pinned Lyon's name to the plant. Lyon did not have long to enjoy the honor, dying in 1814 in the same southern mountains that had made his name. The plant has fared better. Chelone lyonii grows wild along streambanks and seeps in the high southern Appalachians, and 'Hot Lips' is the selection that turned the color up, deeper rose-pink flowers over foliage that emerges with a bronze cast. The flowers arrive in late summer and run into fall, which is the real gift, holding color in the moist and shaded corners just as the rest of the garden tires. Only a bumblebee is strong enough to force the blooms open, so a planting in flower comes with a low percussion of bees muscling in and backing out. Give them wet feet and a little shade and there is very little that does a damp, difficult spot this gracefully, or this late.

Design Notes

A native perennial for the damp, shaded corners that defeat most plants: a streambank, a pond edge, a rain garden, or the low, moist end of a border. The late-summer-into-fall bloom is the real value, holding deep rose-pink just as the rest of the garden tires. Mass for impact among ferns, sedges, and other moisture lovers, and pair with late asters and other autumn companions; the flowers feed bumblebees, which are among the few insects strong enough to open them.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Deep rose-pink, turtlehead-shaped, late summer into fall

Flowers
Inflated, two-lipped, tubular flowers crowded into tight terminal spikes, each shaped like the head of a turtle with the mouth held shut, the lower lip bearded inside with fine yellow hairs. 'Hot Lips' carries them in a deep, saturated rose-pink, darker than the wild type. Bloom comes late, from late summer into early fall, when little else in a shaded, moist border is still going, and the flowers are built for bumblebees, among the only insects heavy enough to pry them open.

Foliage
Glossy, dark green, lance-shaped leaves with toothed margins, held opposite on stiff, square stems. On 'Hot Lips' the new growth emerges with a bronze-purple cast that sets the selection apart well before bloom. The habit is clump-forming and tidy, two to three feet tall, spreading slowly by rhizome into a colony in ground they like.

Fruit
A small dry capsule follows the flowers, holding flat, winged seeds. Ornamentally beside the point, though the seedheads stand cleanly into winter if left.

Care

Read our full care guide

Light. Part shade to full sun; light afternoon shade suits the plant best in hot climates, and the richest color holds out of harsh sun.

Soil. Moist, rich, humusy ground that never bakes; wet feet are welcome, which makes turtlehead a natural for rain gardens and low spots.

Water. Keep the soil consistently moist; water deeply in dry spells, and mulch to hold moisture and keep the roots cool.

Pruning. Deadhead to tidy the planting and limit self-sowing, and cut the stems to the ground in late winter before new growth rises.

Hardiness. USDA zones 3 to 8.
