Every grafted citrus tree is two plants pretending to be one: a familiar fruiting top, and a rootstock below the graft union doing the unglamorous work of roots, vigor, and disease resistance. US-1516 is one of the latter, and a good story all the same. The cross was made by the USDA in 1975, a pairing of opposites: African pummelo, the giant of the genus, crossed with Flying Dragon, the contorted, fiercely thorned, cold-hardy form of trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata) that lends so many hardy citrus their backbone. The seedlings went into the ground at the Whitmore farm in Groveland, Florida in 1976 and then, in the patient way of tree breeding, were watched for forty years. Kim Bowman's program at the USDA lab in Fort Pierce released them at last in 2015, into the worst of the huanglongbing epidemic, the bacterial greening disease that has hollowed out Florida's groves. On infected ground they keep their grafted tops healthier and more productive than the old standbys. We offer them ungrafted, which is an unusual thing to sell and an honest one: this is a tree for the cold-hardy citrus tinkerer, the person who wants to practice budding, raise their own understock, or simply grow the trifoliate-blooded foundation and see how far north the plant will go. They come nearly true from seed, vigorous and uniform, and they ask only that you have plans for them. Graft them bold, or just let them teach you the lower half of the tree.

Design Notes

An unusual offering: a citrus rootstock sold ungrafted, for the cold-hardy citrus tinkerer. Vigorous, thorny, and trifoliate-blooded, US-1516 is the plant to grow to practice budding, raise your own understock, or simply see how far north a hardy citrus foundation will go. Give full sun and sharp, well-drained sandy loam, in the ground through zones 8 to 11 or in a large container. Graft a fruiting variety onto the tree, or grow it on as a hardy, disease-resistant experiment. Not grown for fruit, but for the roots and the story below the graft.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

White, fragrant, spring (on older plants)

Flowers
The usual citrus blossom, once a tree is old enough to carry it: small, white, waxy, and sweetly fragrant in spring. On a rootstock these are beside the point, since the tree is raised for everything below the graft rather than for flower or fruit.

Foliage
Vigorous and evergreen on thorny young stems that betray the trifoliate parent. Most leaves are simple and citrus-glossy, carried on the narrow winged petiole of the family, though true three-part leaves surface here and there, a flicker of the Flying Dragon in the mix.

Fruit
Small, seedy, and sour, of no use at the table. The value is the seed itself: like most citrus, US-1516 sets nucellar seed that comes nearly true to the parent, which is exactly why a rootstock can be raised by the bushel and trusted to stay uniform.

Care

Light. Full sun; at least six to eight hours of direct sun a day.

Soil. Well-drained sandy loam; tolerant of a range of soils, but never waterlogged.

Water. Water moderately through establishment; once settled the plant is vigorous and fairly self-reliant.

Pruning. Prune to shape or to raise a clean stem for grafting; mind the trifoliate thorns, and remove unwanted low shoots.

Grafting. Bud or graft a fruiting citrus onto an established, pencil-thick stem, keeping the graft union clean and above the soil.

Hardiness. USDA zones 8 to 11; a hardy, trifoliate-blooded rootstock, with container culture farther north.
