Few fruits carry the weight of centuries quite like the common fig. Ficus carica, native to the sun-soaked hills of the Mediterranean and the Middle East, has graced gardens and tables since biblical times, and no member of the tribe is more beloved in the American South than 'Celeste', the little fig so sweet that growers have long called the tree the Sugar Fig.

This particular lineage of Ficus carica 'Celeste' comes to us through a story as rich as the fruit. The mother plant, long rooted in Many, Louisiana, was handed down through generations before making its way to east Texas. There Gail Ebner, wife of Aiken City Councilman Reggie Ebner, took cuttings from the family fig and carried them east to South Carolina. From those cherished cuttings come the plants we now offer, grown right here in Aiken soil.

'Celeste' is a hardy, self-pollinating, deciduous fig that bears abundant small to medium fruit, light brown to purplish with a tightly closed eye that helps the crop resist spoilage from rain and insects. The fruit ripens in early to mid-summer and is prized for fresh eating and preserves, or simply plucked warm from the branch and eaten under the sky that ripened them.

This fig thrives in USDA zones 7 to 10 and asks little beyond full sun, fertile well-drained soil, and a measure of patience. Once established, the tree shrugs off drought and heat and gives generously in return, and even the broad, deeply lobed leaves lend a touch of ancient grace to the Southern landscape.

What we offer is more than a plant. This is a living heirloom, rooted in Southern heritage, bearing fruit from a time when home and land were measured not only in acres but in stories passed down and branches well tended.

Design Notes

Plant 'Celeste' where the summer fruit is easy to reach and the bold, hand-shaped leaves can do their tropical work: against a warm south wall, at the corner of a kitchen garden, or as a multi-stemmed specimen on a sunny lawn. The tree makes a generous large shrub or small tree and consorts well with rosemary, pomegranate, and other sun-loving Mediterranean plants. In the cooler part of the range a sheltered wall stores warmth and ripens the crop earlier; where hard freezes are likely, grow the fig in a large container that can shelter through winter.

Flower, Fruit & Foliage

Fruit. Small to medium, round to pear-shaped, with smooth light-brown to violet-purple skin that takes on a dusky blush as the crop ripens in high summer. The closed eye at the apex resists souring and insects, an ideal trait for humid Southern gardens; within, the flesh is a rich rose-pink, dense with honeyed sweetness and a subtle floral note. Ripens early to mid-summer, among the first figs of the season.

Flower. Like all figs, the flowers stay hidden, tiny and inconspicuous within the developing fruit, blooming inward and never opening to the air.

Foliage. Grand and generous, each leaf deeply lobed with three to five broad fingers and up to ten inches across, deep verdant green and slightly rough, releasing an earthy scent when brushed, then turning golden yellow before falling.

Care

Light. Full sun, the more the better for a heavy, sweet crop.

Soil. Fertile, well-drained soil; figs tolerate a range of ground but resent wet feet.

Water. Steady moisture while the fruit swells; established trees are notably drought-tolerant.

Pruning. Prune in late winter to shape and keep the fruit within reach. 'Celeste' crops on both new and old wood, so prune moderately rather than hard.

Hardiness. Hardy in USDA zones 7 to 10; at the colder edge, mulch the roots or grow against a warm wall.
