Ficus heterophylla

$21.00

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 9-11

We are identifying this little-known fig as Ficus heterophylla thanks to Tony Avent at Plant Delights who was probably the source for the cuttings we originally started with. It is a rather scandent shrub with long almost vine-like branches. The adult foliage is attractive with dark green pointed, slightly cordate deciduous leaves with nice red petioles. Juvenile foliage may be lobed. It would probably make an interesting espalier on a shady or semi-shady wall. It is native to south China and much of southern Asia. We will appreciate any customer reports on the performance and merit of this new introduction.

Flower/Foliage

Flower:

  • Like other members of the fig family (Moraceae), Ficus heterophylla produces inconspicuous flowers hidden within a specialized structure called a syconium (a hollow, fleshy receptacle).
  • The flowers are minute and located inside the syconium, where they are pollinated by specialized fig wasps.
  • This unique mutualistic relationship is vital for the plant’s reproduction and is a hallmark of fig species.

Fruit:

  • The fruit is a small fig (syconium) that develops from the flowering structure, usually rounded or slightly oblong.
  • Fruits are typically green when immature, turning yellow, orange, or reddish as they ripen.
  • The ripe fruits are soft and fleshy, providing an important food source for birds, bats, and other wildlife.
  • Each fruit contains numerous tiny seeds, dispersed by animals that consume the figs.

Foliage:

  • The leaves of Ficus heterophylla are variable in shape (heterophyllous), hence the species name, which means "different leaves."
  • Leaves may range from simple and ovate to deeply lobed, sometimes even on the same plant.
  • The upper surface is smooth and green, while the underside may have a lighter, slightly textured appearance.
  • Leaf size varies but typically measures 4–8 inches long and 2–5 inches wide, with a glossy finish that adds ornamental appeal.

Summary:

The flowers of Ficus heterophylla are hidden within its fig-like fruit, a key adaptation for its unique pollination system. The fruit, colorful and nutrient-rich, attracts wildlife, while its foliage, with diverse leaf shapes and a glossy texture, makes this fig species both functional in its ecosystem and visually interesting in cultivated or wild landscapes.

Care Info

Light Requirements: Prefers full sun to partial shade. For optimal growth, provide at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily. In hotter climates, partial shade during the hottest part of the day can help prevent leaf scorch and stress.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-draining soil. Ficus heterophylla prefers loamy or sandy soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0). Incorporating organic matter such as compost can improve soil fertility and structure, promoting healthy root development.

Watering: Requires moderate watering. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during the growing season. Deep, infrequent watering is preferred over shallow, frequent watering to encourage deep root growth. Once established, Ficus heterophylla is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from regular watering during dry periods.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 9-11. Prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity. As a tropical species, Ficus heterophylla does not tolerate frost or cold temperatures well. In cooler regions, it should be grown in a container that can be moved indoors during the winter.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth. An additional light application of fertilizer in mid-summer can promote continued growth. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of the plant’s overall health.

Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead or damaged branches and to shape the plant. Regular pruning helps maintain a compact form and encourages bushier growth. Ficus heterophylla can tolerate heavy pruning if needed, but it is best to prune lightly and regularly to avoid stress.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant, but like other ficus species, it can be susceptible to pests such as aphids, scale insects, and spider mites. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal diseases like powdery mildew and root rot. If pests are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Regularly inspect the plant for any signs of pests or diseases.
