Fig, Creeping

Ficus pumila

$21.00

1 Gallon | Hardiness Zones 8-11

Figvine is very unlike the common edible fig (Ficus carica). This evergreen vine has small fingernail size rounded leaves and is usually seen on masonary walls where it climbs high by means of little rootlets which hold fast to rough surfaces. On walls it can form interesting patterns or a complete cover. As it reaches a certain height and age it's new leaves change to a considerably larger more pointed and leathery adult foliage which is very different. At this point it may send out short branches perpendicular to the wall and produce small inedible fig fruits. It is native to eastern Asia but widely grown in the southern U.S.

Care Info

Light Requirements: Prefers bright, indirect light to partial shade. It can tolerate full shade, but growth may be slower and foliage less dense. In full sun, especially in hotter climates, the leaves may scorch, so protection from direct afternoon sunlight is recommended.

Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-draining, fertile soil. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH (5.5-7.0). Ficus pumila is adaptable to various soil types, including sandy, loamy, and clay soils, as long as they drain well. Adding organic matter like compost can enhance soil structure and fertility.

Watering: Requires regular watering to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water deeply and allow the top inch of soil to dry out between watering sessions. Ficus pumila prefers high humidity, so misting the plant regularly, especially in drier indoor environments, can be beneficial.

Temperature and Humidity: Hardy in USDA zones 8-11. Prefers warm temperatures between 60-85°F (16-29°C) and high humidity. It does not tolerate frost or cold temperatures well, so in cooler regions, it should be grown indoors or in a protected outdoor location. Indoor plants benefit from a humid environment, so placing a humidity tray or using a humidifier can help.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring through early fall). Reduce feeding during the winter months when growth slows. Over-fertilizing can lead to excessive foliage growth with fewer vines.

Pruning: Prune regularly to control growth, maintain shape, and remove any dead or damaged leaves. Pruning also encourages bushier growth. Ficus pumila can grow aggressively, so regular trimming may be necessary to keep it within bounds, especially when grown as a ground cover or climbing plant.

Pests and Problems: Generally pest-resistant but can occasionally attract pests like aphids, spider mites, and scale insects. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases such as leaf spot. If pests are detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Regularly inspect the plant for any signs of pests or disease.
