Ilex amelanchier is one of the surprises of the genus, a holly that drops the leaves in fall and carries none of the usual prickles. This rare native grows as a tall deciduous shrub or small tree, and the female plants, this one among them, hang dull, matte red berries on unusually long stems, a soft-toned, almost muted display quite unlike the glossy scarlet of a Christmas holly.

The epithet amelanchier is the giveaway, borrowed straight from the serviceberry, Amelanchier, for leaves that echo that small tree: oval, soft, and up to four inches long, nothing like the spiny evergreen foliage most people picture on a holly. The likeness has earned the plant several common names, Sarvis Holly, Serviceberry Holly, and Shadbush Holly among them, each pointing back to that gentle, deciduous leaf.

In the wild Sarvis Holly is genuinely scarce, threading the tea-dark blackwater rivers and floodplains of the Southeastern Coastal Plain, gathering around natural ponds, and settling into the clay-based depressions known as Carolina bays, with a northern limit in southeastern North Carolina. Little known in gardens, the plant is one of those quietly special natives that reward a collector willing to give the roots damp, acid ground.

As a female, this holly needs a male of a compatible holly nearby to set the long-stemmed fruit, and given that partner the plant makes an unusual specimen for a moist, acid, part-shaded spot: a pond edge, a rain garden, a woodland border, or a native collection. The soft summer foliage, red fall berries on bare twigs, and sheer rarity all recommend the shrub. Set the roots with sweetbay, itea, and swamp azalea in the same damp company.
